"The American warblers are incredible bits of life, small and active, varied and colorful." – Kenn Kaufman

Pictured here is a Northern Yellow Warbler, a small songbird commonly found near water in brushy habitats or wet woods across North America. This one was spotted near the Arkansas River in Buena Vista, CO. Next time you come to 100 Elk, bring some binoculars to do some of your own bird watching! πŸͺΆ

Today is National Nature Photography Day! 100 Elk visitors and staff have greatly captured the beauty of the property since its founding and for that we are so grateful!

National Nature Photography Day was established in 2006 by the North American Nature Photography Association (NANPA) to celebrate the art of photographing nature and promote the conservation of the environment. Happy photographing!

Moth or butterfly?

It's a moth! Pictured here on our friend's finger is a police car moth, or Gnophaela vermiculata, often mistaken for a butterfly. The signs? This moth holds its wings flat over its body, while butterflies typically hold their wings folded vertically upright when resting, and it has a stockier, "fuzzier" body compared to the generally slender and smooth bodies of butterflies.

These moths are primarily found in western North America, and prefer moist mountain meadows, open forests, and areas along rivers and streams. No wonder it found its home here at 100 Elk!
