This summer, our students are celebrating diversity through a global adventure! First, the children “traveled” to Peru! They wrapped colorful yarn around a cardboard alpaca cut out, and learned how alpaca wool is sheared and turned into cozy clothing. About a week later, they “traveled” to Greece! The students created beautiful Greek Vases inspired by Ancient Greek pottery.

At ICA, we love to embrace and explore different cultures through hands-on learning and creative projects.

Earlier in the week, we celebrated the 100th day of school! Our Kindergarten class had a special take home project. The students picked 100 items of something and create a display to showcase in the school!

Mrs. Travers, our Kindergarten teacher, taught the skill of counting to 100 by ones and tens, prior to the 100th day of school. By doing this, the students were able to independently group their loose parts by 10s in order to create their projects.

We are so proud of our little learners for doing such a great job!

Now that the holidays are over and everyone is looking to the new year, we wanted to take a moment to reach out to all our families and touch base regarding a few changes at ICA this year.

The first change, as everyone knows, is the change in our hours. Our hours will be changing on February 1 to 7:00am - 5:30pm Monday-Friday.

The second change is the addition of days off to our school calendar. In previous years we have followed the more traditional "daycare" school closing schedule. This included major holidays (sometimes the day after) and one week summer vacation.
However, our vision has always been to be more than just a "daycare". We don't want our staff to be babysitters. It has always been our vision to offer the best program we can in terms of quality. This is where the change in our school calendar comes into play.

By adding professional development days our teachers no longer need to stay for state mandated training at night during the week. Our trainings are sometimes 3-4 hours long. Our teachers, who are almost all mothers with young children, were staying late in the evenings sometimes until 9pm after already working a full shift. Proper training for our teachers ensures that children in our care receive the best we can offer.

By adding a break in between Christmas and New Years we ensure that our teachers get the same time to refuel themselves and reconnect with loved ones during the holidays, that many other industries offer their employees.

We believe that teachers in childcare are not valued the same way that other professions are valued and we are looking to change that by offering our teachers time off and days dedicated to learning and helping themselves help the children they care for every day.

Teacher burnout is the leading reason for the teacher shortage happening all across our country and it is especially true in the childcare industry. We want to be a school where teachers want to work because they are valued and a place where people want to send their children, not just for the hours of operation or the amount of holidays they take off, but because of the quality of care offered to their family.
