Service Excellence Helping home service pros grow bigger, faster. Service Excellence was founded with the goal of helping independent contractors reach their dreams.

We work with contractors in their key performance areas, by training the managers and the employees. WE IGNITE THE POWER WITHIN!

A booked call can still become a bad dispatch. The CSR’s job is to win the call and gather the right information. Dispatch has a different job: match the right technician, consider location and urgency, and protect the day's profitability. If your team is only filling openings, that’s not a people problem. It’s a training problem.

If you want to improve, you have to be willing to hear an honest opinion about your work. That’s what criticism can be.

It can point out what needs to change. It can also tell you what you did well and should keep doing. The value is in getting a clear outside view of your performance.

Homeowners experience the system through how they use it, not through manufacturer specs. If it still does what they want it to do, they’re likely to assume it’s working properly. And if it’s working, they assume it’s safe.

That’s why technicians have to understand the customer’s perspective before explaining the technical one.

If your diagnostic process only lives in your best technician’s head, you don’t actually have a process. A real process lets the newest technician on the team follow it and the manager coach them. That’s what creates consistency.

The question is simple: could your newest technician follow your best technician’s diagnostic process today?

A routine works until the day gets messy. A ritual survives the mess. If something matters enough, don’t tie it to the perfect time. Move it 30 minutes earlier. Move it 30 minutes later. Just don’t remove it.

A full schedule can hide a bad dispatch decision. If you send whoever is available instead of the technician whose skills match the call, everyone stays busy and the mistake is easy to miss. That’s why busy is not the same as well-dispatched. Match the call to the skill first. Then factor in location and urgency.

Running calls on your own can make it easy to believe you’ve mastered the job. But Chris regularly meets technicians who are treated like experts and still don’t fully understand how the systems they work on actually work.

Keep learning the technical side. Keep improving how you communicate with customers. Keep getting better at the craft of in-home service.

Your technician may be leading with the right problem for the wrong reason.

Techs naturally think:

Is it safe?
Is it working the way the manufacturer intended?
How does the customer use it?

Customers often think in the opposite order. If they can still use it the way they want, they assume it’s working. And if it’s working, they assume it’s safe.

So don’t skip the safety issue. Lead with what the customer stands to lose. Then explain how the system is operating and why the safety issue matters.

When a tech reviews findings with a homeowner, the red items are the easy part. Red means something isn't working. That ties directly to utility, so it's already a priority for the customer. You still need a real presentation and a practiced process. You just aren't fighting for their attention.

Everything else on that checklist is where the skill actually shows.

Which items do your techs struggle to present?
