Recently our staff had the opportunity to hear Kristin Souers, one of the authors of Fostering Resilient Learners, at our October in-service day. She did a great job and I hastily wrote down quotes of things that resonated with me. You will get the benefit of my thoughts on some of that! 😂

I often (almost always) wonder if education has gotten away from the human side of things. We are so focused on pacing guides and test scores and this and that; we need to remember we educate PEOPLE.

Educating kids is actually messy. Kids have stuff, we have stuff. In no universe do kids come to school "ready to learn" every day. Here is where we can make a difference. Realize that fact, internalize it, and know that what we do matters when we meet their needs, right where they are. Here is where transformational work begins.

We no longer educate kids who come to school without ACES, trauma and the need to be genuinely cared for. Let's make a difference for all.

In short, laugh, and ask, it isn't about you, and you are not a doormat.😀

Working with struggling adolescents isn't always easy. We have to learn how to connect with them as well as set healthy boundaries for both of us mentally, emotionally, and physically.

I love tough nugget kids and through my mess-ups and successes, these tips are part of a larger list of things I have learned.

I hope they help anyone working with kids who struggle.

This quote was a good reminder to me today.

Sometimes I think I have to have "it all" done now. I need to be spot-on in my handling of situations where there is a struggle. I need to be a great student in my administrative program and I have to be a good leader at school.

Sometimes it even spills into the home. A great mom, girlfriend, and homemaker.

Then I remind myself what small thinking that is. To make growth takes time. It also takes patience and grace. To expect it all is to dig yourself into a pit of despair and negativity.

Take heart and know, good things do take time.
