Proposed Wolf Hills Solar project to power 42,000 homes in Washington County, Virginia 05/30/2024

"The plant will generate enough power to power about 42,000 homes and it will probably contain around half-a-million solar panels," said Malnight. "It's located adjacent to the Wolf Hills Power Plant, which is an existing facility that has been generating power reliably in the community. I think it's been a very good neighbor -- we will be locating immediately around that power plant and we will be utilizing the same infrastructure that it uses to interconnect the power to the power grid."

Strong state solar policies boost adoption of distributed energy 05/21/2024

A recent report, The state(s) of distributed solar—2023 update from the Institute of Local Self Reliance (ILSR), estimates that 29 GW of solar capacity was installed in 2023; 31% of which is distributed solar. Distributed solar is solar that is owned by individuals, small businesses and public entities—and is generated at or very near the site where it is used.

As California Gets Drier, Solar Panels Could Help Farms Save Water 05/10/2024

Responding to skyrocketing interest from farmers and energy companies, however, California policymakers began mobilizing this year to obtain funding to advance the technology.

Some experts say that agrivoltaics is vital to preserving food production in California, where many farmers face pressure to retire parts of their land to comply with water conservation regulations or sell it to solar companies expanding production to meet national emissions reduction targets.

As California Gets Drier, Solar Panels Could Help Farms Save Water More research and funding are needed to prove the viability of incorporating solar panels onto farms in California, where the technology has been slow to scale compared to other states and countries.

Opinion | How to Make Solar Power More Ecologically Beneficial 05/08/2024

The Ecology Behind Ecovoltaics

“So far, our work shows that the distinct micro-environments created by solar arrays produce similarly varied patterns of plant growth. This finding is encouraging: It means that the environmental variation created by solar panels passively tracking the sun is enough to make plants respond differently. These micro-environments could potentially support a mosaic of plant communities that benefit from different conditions.”

Opinion | How to Make Solar Power More Ecologically Beneficial "An ecovoltaic approach to solar can produce positive ecological outcomes and make solar energy even more sustainable," Sturchio writes.

OPINION: Renewable energy transition is sparking a renaissance in Four Corners region 04/29/2024

The transition to renewable energy, in part due to the state’s (New Mexico) Energy Transition Act, represents more than just a shift in power sources; it brings a fundamental economic and environmental transformation. With several solar projects already permitted and shovel-ready, we can harness clean energy’s economic potential and propel our community toward a brighter future.

OPINION: Renewable energy transition is sparking a renaissance in Four Corners region OPINION: As our community moves on from its economic reliance on coal, we are witnessing a renaissance of sorts, northwestern New Mexico is becoming renowned not just for its natural
