Yesterday, Saint John's Catholic Prep welcomed new and returning students to campus for the start of the 2026-2027 school year – our 198th school year as an educational institution! Each year, we choose a theme to guide and inspire our community. This year’s theme is “Bring All That You Are,” inspired by Sister Thea Bowman, a Black Catholic nun who was a trailblazer for racial equality and an inspiring witness of faith. This theme reminds us that we are each blessed with unique, God-given gifts and talents, and challenges us to share those gifts generously with one another. Individually, we are good. But together, we are GREAT!

The SJCP Saint Thomas Aquinas Renaissance Scholars (STARS) kicked off the 2026-2027 school year with their first official meeting! Students engaged in lively discussions and collaborative activities centered on the Battle of Bull Run and the Battle of Gettysburg. They also completed a literary analysis of a historical fiction text and thoughtfully debated the decisions made by the characters. It was an exciting morning of history, literature, critical thinking, and collaboration. We’re looking forward to all that this talented group of scholars will accomplish together!

Following the Freshman Convocation, the Class of 2030 spent their first day on the SJCP campus at their retreat. Ms. Dawn Miller, faculty members, and the Campus Ministry Peer Ministers led the retreat, sharing their wisdom and faith with the freshmen. The new students enjoyed icebreakers, small-group discussions, and times of prayer. They were blessed with a talk from our new seminarian, Timothy Shaia, who shared the life story of Sister Thea Bowman, who inspired our theme for the 2026-2027 school year, “Bring all that you are”. They visited our St. Teresa of Calcutta Chapel, where they wrote letters to themselves, which will be returned to them in four years at their senior retreat to reflect on how they have changed during their time at Saint John's. It was great to have our new students on campus as they begin their high school journey as Vikings!

Cell phones must not be used and must remain in lockers or bags from 8 AM to 2:45 PM. They are NOT to be carried in pockets or hands during the school day.

As the Class of 2027 begins their senior year and the college application process, our Student Support Center hosted a two-day College Application Boot Camp. With guidance from College Coordinator Mrs. Diana Seymour, the seniors are completing their college applications. Admissions representatives from four of our guaranteed-acceptance partner colleges and universities- Hood College, Loyola University Maryland, Marymount University, and McDaniel College reviewed their college essays and provided feedback. It was an invaluable opportunity for our seniors.

Saint John's welcomed the Class of 2030 to campus for their Freshman Convocation. Mr. Will Knotek, Head of School, welcomed the new students and their parents. He emphasized the importance of making the most of their time at Saint John's Catholic Prep, noting that their journey will culminate with Commencement in just four short years, so take advantage of the opportunities, use your talents, and make a difference in the lives of others. SJCP board member Father John A. Williamson celebrated Mass, emphasizing that God will continue to scatter the seeds of his love, faith, & his kingdom, whether we are ready to receive it or not. The ceremony concluded with the lighting of the 2030 candle and the hymn, "Go Make A Difference."
