This week I was thinking about one of my favorite parts of teaching violin to young kids, which is that we’re working on so much more than just violin.
There’s something called executive functioning - which is an umbrella term for skills like working memory, controlling impulses, and shifting gears, and it’s something music helps develop.
When you think about the little things we ask a five-year-old to do in their lesson, it starts to make sense. They have to remember a sequence of steps, wait to play, listen for cues, and sometimes I ask them to take something they know really well and suddenly do it differently - like playing a smooth legato piece in a short stacatto way. That’s a big mental shift for them. And it turns out there’s research showing that music instruction can support these skills in young children.

But honestly, the kids have absolutely no clue any of this is happening. They’re just playing, being silly, spinning our review wheel, and trying new ways to play a song. Underneath all of that, their brains are getting a rich workout.
