After 19 Years, Middle School STEAM Teacher John Harris Retires
Originally trained as a mechanical engineer, John joined Shipley in 2006 and went on to teach Middle School math before leading the STEAM Lab and Makerspace program. His student-driven approach encouraged students to take risks, solve problems, and learn through doing. Under his leadership, Shipley’s Middle School Science Olympiad team qualified for the Pennsylvania State Tournament five years in a row.
Beyond the classroom, John served as a coach, advisor, mentor, and leader across countless programs and activities. As Head of School Ian Craig shared, John created an environment where students felt supported enough to experiment, fail, grow, and try again.

👽 Breaking news: aliens have landed at Shipley.
Ceramics I students teamed up with Pre-K buddies for a project that was equal parts creativity, collaboration, and fun. Together, they dreamed up original aliens, complete with unforgettable names like Mr. Stinky, Globby, Donut, and Graham the Alien.
Using the drawings as their blueprint, the Upper School students carefully sculpted each character from clay, bringing their young partners’ imaginations to life. Later, the Pre-K students visited the Upper School to paint and glaze the pieces alongside their buddies before gathering for a big reveal.
There’s something special about watching our oldest and youngest students create together, it’s a reminder that imagination is even better when it’s shared.
