An Open Letter to the Bi-College Community* Echoing the voices of wider America, the Black students of Bryn Mawr and Haverford Colleges are calling to you: “we can’t breathe.” For the last few months we as Black people have had to contend with an avalanche of smothering events: the coronavirus pandemic disproportionately taking the live...

We, the members of Mujeres* at Bryn Mawr College, proudly stand in solidarity with the Black community and the Black Lives Matter movement as well as the protestors across the country condemning racism and oppression. Justice for the lives of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Mike Brown, Eric Garner, Sandra Bland, Ahmaud Arbery, and those not named — who have fallen victim to police brutality perpetuated by systematic racism — is long overdue.
As an affinity group that promotes and represents the Latinx community on campus, we want to acknowledge the anger and vulnerability that the members of our community are experiencing. Specifically, our Afro-latinx, black brothers* and sisters*. We condemn anti-black violence and the white supremacy that perpetuates systematic oppression in the United States. To stand in solidarity, we urge our Latinx community to show up, recognize, and address the anti-blackness that permeates throughout our own heritage and communities.
We urge our white counterparts to acknowledge their privilege and take action. To be an ally, you must educate yourselves, reflect, and become comfortable in the discomfort. Because we can’t do it for you.
It’s time to dismantle institutions of oppression and white supremacy. Let’s look to one another and say, “Tu lucha es mi lucha. Your fight is my fight.“
Finally, we would like to reiterate that silence is violence. Take a moment to look through the links provided to learn more about anti-blackness in the Latinx community and ways that you can continue to be an ally and advocate. Black Lives Matter!
With Solidarity,
Mujeres*
