A recent project involved a house of worship that initially had a reverberation time of 3 seconds in the low mid frequencies, which could potentially increase to 4.2 seconds if the carpet were removed. The situation was further complicated by the fact that the space is also used as a gymnasium, limiting the options for acoustical treatment. Ultimately, we were able to design the acoustics to achieve a consistent 2-second reverberation time in most frequencies in an empty condition, using a reasonable quantity of absorber panels that stayed within budget. Our design also includes a future acoustic treatment upgrade/addition to further tidy up the low frequency. The impressive Danley sound system will perform exceptionally well with the new acoustics!
The picture shows our equipment setup for collecting acoustic data from the venue. EASERA was used along with our small Dodecahedron loudspeaker. The low-frequency signal was then separately measured using another loudspeaker, and the data is spliced around 200Hz. We measured reverberation time down to 63Hz by default.

Next adventure… We're plunging into the challenge of taming a 5-second reverberation time in a house of worship. The measurement was done using balloon pops at several locations. This time, we're not just slapping up some acoustic treatment. We’ll be on a treasure hunt for the perfect budget-friendly balance between loudspeaker layout/choice and those lovely sound-absorbing treatments. This is a glimpse into our previous project, where we encountered a consistent bump around 400Hz in an auditorium. This issue resulted in a muddy sound quality from the loudspeakers. To address the negative effect of the 400Hz room resonance, we utilized Filter Hose to create an FIR filter.
Filter Hose is a straightforward FIR filter calculator, accompanied by online courses on FIR filter creation. If you're looking for comprehensive education and tools for FIR filtering, we have everything you need at www.HXAudioLab.com.

Working with acoustic computer modeling presents various challenges. It is often necessary to model materials to improve the estimation of absorption and scattering coefficients. Upon receiving a modeling project, we review each surface area to ensure that the custom-built walls are accurately represented. Ultimately, we may need to use three or more programs to build an accurate acoustic computer model.
HX Audio Lab accepts acoustic work of any size or complexity. Contact us if you have any questions.
