Real Voices of Philadelphia Real Voices of Philly is a gathering of young adults non-speakers who spell to communicate! We presume mental competence.

Come and join the fun, Friday gatherings, outings, & meet-ups just outside northeast Philly. Our mission: to unlock voices, to foster friendships, and to promote lives of purpose for non-speakers. The Quarry Road Center is a co-operative learning group, and offers educational and social opportunity to young adults who type and spell to communicate, that is, those who are non-speaking or have limit

ed speech, and often other movement dysregulation issues. Disregulated movement affects those with Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Rett syndrome, and many other conditions. The QRC welcomes all forms of supported communication (RPM, FC, S2C, AAC etc) and all individuals seeking education and friendship. The Quarry Road Center believes that dysregulated movements (such as spinning, grabbing, flapping, banging, lack of eye contact, lack of facial expression, inability to generate meaningful speech) do not in any way indicate a lack of mental acuity. The Quarry Road Center began as a dream that Owen Simons and his parents Wystan and Edward Simons had, for a place that would be an academic and social bridge to the rest of the world. Owen was presumed intellectually disabled until May of 2018, when his voice was freed.

Social Night at Real Voices Philly tonight 5/11th! Potluck and conversation-- 6-8:30pm.
We will have a musician, and extra comm support, so spellers/typers can chat or rock out, while parents have a chance to chat too.

Thought for the Week(end)! Thanks to our sister organization in Maryland, Reach Every Voice, for this important reminder. ♥️ It is so, so hard to overcome the tendency to read the body as the mind.

Another note: this applies to many situations, and many people with various issues. Whether it is drugs, fatigue, depression, anxiety, or great, how people ACT did not always represent who they actually ARE.
