Yakusoku Kumite was on the agenda tonight for both classes and we drilled them!

Basic worked the Kihon set and, at the end of class, extracted self-defense responses to each final attack from a practical view.

Advanced worked the M2 set with precision, focusing on proper technique, stances, footwork, timing and distancing.

We topped off the evening with a strong Tonfa and Eku training session in Kobudo! Great job everyone and see you all next class!

Two members of Franz Karate traveled to Columbus, Ohio on Saturday, August 1, to compete in the International Martial Arts Championship hosted by the World Martial Arts Federation (WMAF). The WMAF is comprised of members from more than 11 countries, many of which were represented at the event, including the United States, Canada, Mexico, and China.

The event opened with a grand ceremony featuring performances by dignitaries, martial arts demonstration teams, and an impressive display of traditional Asian Lion Dancing. Competition divisions included Kung Fu, Tae Kwon Do, and Karate, with competitors from around the world vying for International Champion titles.

Grant Wogoman, a novice student at Franz Karate, competed in the 13–14-year-old Novice Kata division, performing Naihanchi Shodan to earn his first International Champion title.

Steven Franz Kyoshi, owner and Chief Instructor of Franz Karate, competed in the Executive Black Belt Empty Hand Kata and Weapons Kata divisions, earning International Champion titles in both. Franz Kyoshi also captured the Overall International Black Belt Grand Champion titles in both Empty Hand Kata and Weapons Kata. These victories marked the 15th and 16th World Champion titles of his competitive career, which has spanned more than four decades.

Strong Kata training tonight in both classes!

The Basic class worked on technical refinement, power progression, and proper ex*****on.

The Advanced class drilled their highest learned Kata, focusing on fundamental retention, technical refinement, power generation, and developing a deeper understanding of the world that exists within each Kata.

Kobudo class was all about preparing for Thursday's Kobudo examinations too! Good luck to everyone testing, and make sure you practice over the next two days before the exam.

As our students head back to school, we want to remind each of you that you are Karateka Warriors!

A true warrior is compassionate. A true warrior doesn't need to impress others. A true warrior has the courage to stand up for those who need a friend, a helping hand, or someone simply willing to care.

As you begin this new school year, be wise. Be kind. Be compassionate. Watch out for those around you. Include the student who feels left out. Encourage the one who is struggling. Stand beside someone who is being bullied. Small acts of kindness can change someone's entire day...and sometimes, even their life.

As we often say in the dojo:

"Karate isn't about punching and kicking...it's about becoming a greater version of yourself."

Go out and be the kind of warrior our world needs.

Solid Kata training tonight in both classes, along with some very important advice from Franz Kyoshi.

Kata isn't learned through shortcuts. It's built through hard work, repetition, corrections, more repetition, and the determination to keep improving until you get it right. That's how we train at our dojo.

The funny thing is, the lessons don't stop with Karate. The same mindset that builds strong Kata also builds strong character, discipline, patience, and perseverance in everyday life.

Another great night at the dojo!

Kata was on the agenda this evening and we definitely worked and improved in both classes. Advanced did a full Kata review, then individual repetitions to improve technique, ability, Kime and focus.

We topped of the night with a busy training session on Nunchaku and Sai in Kobudo as well.

What a great night of training and if, you weren't here, you definitely missed out on some invaluable insight from Franz Kyoshi!
