26 tornado warnings were issued by IWX on August 24, 2016 which was, at the time, and still is today, the most Tornado Warnings our office has ever issued in a single day! A total of 14 tornadoes occurred in our forecast area during the outbreak.

With the severe threat diminishing, I wanted to share the view that we have while we monitor severe weather on its way to the area.

We have Reflectivity/Velocity from two different radar programs as a primary and a backup, current wind gusts/direction, 24 hour observed rainfall, radio communications with the county/state, local news, national news, and a direct chat group with the US National Weather Service Northern Indiana to provide them real-time reports.

Out of view is a computer setup and dedicated to Nixel to push out any watches or warnings as text messages.

When severe weather approaches, the office is fully staffed with volunteers to take phone calls and reports as needed. CERT is typically put on stand-by to respond for any traffic control needs to help alleviate stress on law enforcement.

Thank you to everyone who follows along and provides information to us!

Storms have intensified to our northwest and will have the greatest potential to create heavy rain leading to flooding, especially if they track through the areas south of US-30 that have received plenty of rain so far. Gusty to damaging wind cannot be ruled out.

08/13/2026

More heavy rain is possible tonight and the flood watch for counties along/south of US-30 has been extended until Friday morning. A few storms may also be capable of gusty winds but severe weather chances are very low. Never drive through water-covered roadways. Turn around, don't drown!
