Texas Kyokushin Karate Private or semi-private only. Openings are limited. 18+ Only. To apply email: [email protected] Kyokushin Karate has been part of my life since 1980.

I'm not currently accepting new students while I focus on health and family, but I remain active writing, teaching through my blog and YouTube channel, and serving on the USA-IFK and IFK Media Committees. I expect to resume instruction in the future on a limited, hands-on basis. This is a pause, not a retirement.

The kanji and Kanku are instantly recognizable to anyone who has spent time in Kyokushin. But as Kyokushin developed into different organizations, some retained the traditional symbols while others adopted variations and distinctive emblems of their own.
This new page looks at the symbols associated with four branches of the Kyokushin family: traditional Kyokushin, the IFK, WKO Shinkyokushinkai, and Kyokushin-kan.
Osu!

Explore Kyokushin symbols, including the Kyokushinkai kanji, Kanku, IFK emblem, Shinkyokushinkai symbols, and Kyokushin-kan kanji.

I’ve added a new reference page to the Kyokushin Karate Blog: Kyokushin Kata — Names, Meanings, and History.
It brings together the Japanese names, traditional meanings, historical background, and training significance of the major Kyokushin kata, including Taikyoku, Pinan, Sanchin, Tensho, Yantsu, Kanku, Saiha, Garyu, and others.
Some of the history surrounding kata varies depending on the source and tradition, so where appropriate I’ve included those differing accounts rather than forcing one answer.
If you’ve ever wondered what the names mean, where the kata came from, or what they are intended to develop, this page should be a useful reference.
Osu!

Explore Kyokushin kata names and history, from Taikyoku and Pinan to Sanchin and Tensho, with origins, meanings, and lineage.

I thought I was finished with the idea when I wrote Position Before Technique. Then I started looking at how the same principle shows up in BJJ, boxing, Musashi, and the way I was taught Kyokushin more than forty years ago.

Different arts, different language, same problem to solve.

What Every Fighting Art Figured Out

Kyokushin, boxing, BJJ, and swordsmanship all arrived at the same lesson in different ways: position comes first.

What is the Purpose of Kata?

The idea for this piece started with a discussion about someone training in a dojo that no longer included kata in its regular curriculum. For many of us who practice traditional karate, particularly Kyokushin, kata is simply part of what we learn.

That got me thinking about what kata actually contributes to our training, why some people value it and others don’t, and why I still believe it has an important place in karate after more than four decades of practice.

Osu!

Explore the purpose of kata in traditional karate, from preserving tradition and practical application to the continual refinement of renma.
