Today is Juneteenth, a federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation that had been signed by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863. Juneteenth, first celebrated by African Americans in Texas, is now celebrated across the country. Learn more in our Juneteenth research guide.

We unfortunately missed by a couple of days, but this week’s post shows images of our nursing program throughout our institution’s history. There have been nursing classes available since our very first year, and hundreds, if not thousands, of nurses who took courses with us have gone on to serve the local area, as well as across the state and the nation.
