We are excited to have Professor Eileen Johnson with us for this year's event, "Crossroads!"
In her talk, "Building a Resilient Future,” Professor Johnson discusses the need for cooperation and communication between the natural sciences, social sciences and humanities in the face of an unpredictable future due to the changing climate. “Building resilience not only will require the creation of new professions but will require we pursue the avocation of being participants in our communities,” says Professor Johnson. “And we may be surprised to learn that we have many of the tools needed to build a resilient future.” Professor Johnson teaches Environmental Studies at Bowdoin College. Her courses integrate digital and computational studies with environmental studies. A social scientist, she researches the ways in which collaborations emerge to address environmental challenges.

We are excited to have Safa Saleh with us for this year's event, "Crossroads!"
In her talk, "I Am a Refugee," Safa shares her family's story of fleeing Iraq in 2006 and coming to the United States. Through her story, Safa aims to humanize the global refugee crisis, challenge preconceptions about the immigration process in the United States, and discuss how it is our responsibility as a country to address the problem.
Safa is a member of Bowdoin's Class of 2022. Now a resident of Cumberland, Maine, she was born in Baghdad, Iraq. Due to the war, in 2006 her family fled the country. After living one year as refugees in Jerash, Jordan, they finally moved to the United States in October 2007. At Bowdoin, Safa hopes to major in Neuroscience. Her passions range from activism and immigration reform to scientific research, global health, and medicine. As a refugee, she is especially interested in issues regarding refugee and migrant health. After Bowdoin, Safa hopes to pursue a medical degree and a career as a surgeon with the purpose of aiding those especially vulnerable populations.
