As The Wall Street Journal’s Evan Gershkovich ’14 remains in Russian custody, support for the jailed correspondent remains strong among the Bowdoin community, many of whom remember him as a gifted and diligent student. “We are deeply concerned about Evan's safety, and our thoughts are with him and his family,” said Bowdoin President Clayton S. Rose in an email to the campus community.

On Saturday, we had the honor of celebrating the 1970-71 men’s hockey team that won Bowdoin’s first ECAC Championship by defeating the University of Vermont in overtime. The team was recognized at a pregame reception and on the bench at the start of the Bowdoin
Men’s Ice Hockey game vs. Colby. There was a ceremonial puck-drop on center ice with 1970-1971 co-captain Ed Good and 2022-2023 co-captain Jimmy Duffy ’23.
The 1970-1971 team, coached by Sid Watson, finished the season with a record of 19-4-1, playing both Division 1 and 2 opponents. Co-captain Bob Kullen was named an All-American, and Kullen, co-captain Ed Good, and Bob Hall were named to the ECAC All-East First Team. Goalie Mike Talbot established a Bowdoin single-season record of 1.75 goals-against average that still stands. Coach Watson was named the 1971 National College Division Coach of the Year.

In 1971, first-year student Saddie Smith '75 stepped onto campus and met Greg McQuater '72. Smith and McQuater formed an instant bond that has resulted in more than fifty years of wonderful friendship, despite living on separate coasts. They have been so aligned in life that their children were born on the very same day in 1986!
McQuater returned to campus for Smith’s graduation in 1975 and took this photo in front of the Walker Art Building. Now, McQuater and Smith serve on the Bowdoin College Alumni Council together and returned to campus in early April for their first Volunteer Spring Conference. It was only fitting that they recreate their photo fifty years later!
