Wise Career Counseling

Wise Career Counseling What do you want to be when you grow up? I'm here to help you answer that question! Let me help you determine what to be when you grow up!

So many young adults head to college with no idea of what they really want to do with their lives, sometimes wasting years and thousands of dollars trying to find their way. My service is designed to point clients in a direction toward a career that can provide meaning and fulfillment throughout their work life. The service consists of three parts, the first of which is an intake meeting in which

I get to know a little about the client's personality and interests. The second part is the completion of two assessments, the Myers Briggs Type Indicator and the Strong Interest Inventory, by the client at home. The third part is the interpretation of the assessment results and discussing their implications. Additional meetings after the interpretation are welcome and free to the client. As a teacher of over 20 years, I feel that I was lucky to find a career that suits my personality and interests well, as I didn't receive much direction in my formative years. High school guidance offices are inundated with student-to-counselor ratios that don't allow for meaningful investigation into career pathways. I hope to provide confidence and peace of mind to students in their post-high school endeavors, or new directions for people in the work force who are unhappy with their current situation.

Happy New Year!

If you’re a parent of a teenager (especially if the teen is in grade 11) who is unsure of what kind of career they would like to pursue, I can help!

Career guidance with me involves the Myers Briggs Type Indicator and Strong Interest Inventory assessments to generate potential leads to careers that one would find satisfying and fulfilling. In the case of teenagers, this is typically most helpful in helping to determine what to do immediately following high school. College? Trade School? Work force? It can obviously be costly to head down one of those paths without some confidence in your decision that you’ll be choosing the one that fits you best.

If you’re looking for such help for your teenager, or even if you’re considering a career change yourself, feel free to contact me for more information: (317) 840-0272 or [email protected].

I'm still here!

As the school year ends, it's time for juniors- and seniors-to-be to put some serious thought into their futures. Things to consider:

SENIORS - if there is no plan in place, maybe it's time to talk to me. I've got some tools that could help to supply some thoughts on potential career directions. I've not got a magic 8-ball, I can't see your future... but I'm confident I can get you pointed in a fulfilling direction. Contact me at [email protected].

If you plan to head to college after high school, and have not yet taken the SAT or ACT, plan to do so ASAP. Generally it's a good idea to take both one time, then pick the one you felt better about and take it a second time. ACT has more than just math and English on it, so some students prefer it. Admissions officers generally don't have a preference.

If the plan is to join the armed forces, it's a good idea to take the ASVAB soon. That test determines the branches for which a recruit is eligible, and also jobs in the military for which the recruit is eligible. Talk to a recruiter to get good studying advice! It, like the SAT or ACT, is a test that you may take multiple times, though there are rules that govern how many times it may be taken.

If the plan is to head to a trade school after high school, now is the time to start researching schools, finding scholarships, etc. Reach out to the schools and training locations to get your best information. Some employers even have training centers of their own.

JUNIORS - now is the time to start crystallizing a view for your future! Even if you don't know exactly what you want to do when you get older, it's time to start finding a general direction. I can help with that!

One thing you should consider, though, is getting a job, an internship, or some ongoing volunteer activity. Anything where you can get experience in the world of work. This will help you start to get a feel for the kinds of tasks for which you are well-suited, and which ones you'd rather avoid.

For high school seniors-to-be, the time has come to start making some serious decisions! College, trade school, apprenticeship, military... what to do after graduation in May or June of next year? Time to start filling out applications or visiting recruiters very soon!

If you know a senior-to-be who's career of choice right now is "I Have No Clue," I can help!

Using the Strong Interest Inventory and the Myers Briggs Type Indicator tools along with old-fashioned conversation, we'll generate a list of potential careers that could provide a great deal of satisfaction. With this information, more informed decisions regarding post-secondary training can be made.

If you're looking for someone to tell you, "This is it - this is the career you should pursue," then I'm not your guy. Our time working together is not going to give you the magic answer to the question, "What do you want to do with the rest of your life?" What I do give you is information that will equip you to make decisions that aren't shots in the dark.

Get in touch - I'd love to help out!
