I love using partner songs to build confidence and awareness in singers: blend, volume, tuning.
Next step is to add Rose, Rose and an ostinato to make it four parts. This is 7th grade.

7th grade - singing in mixed formation. We started with a three song partner song set. Sang it in three parts: sop, tenor, alto. Then mixed it up by assigning kids numbers down the rows 1 1 2 2 3 3 etc. After they successfully tackled THAT, I numbered them off 1 2 3 etc, and took away the piano support. I love that they just kept going!! We celebrated every single step, and they rose to the challenge. Excited to see what they accomplish this year!

We use “whiteboard” check-for-understandings a LOT in our middle school choirs.
*Each student has a binder, so we have them add a piece of blank white paper to the back cover of their binder. This creates a surface they can write on/wipe off with dry erase markers.
*When doing an informal assessment/check, I ask the question, tell them to “write it and hide it”.
*When I see binders up against their torsos, I know they’ve finished answering.
*I say “show me”, and they flip their binders around and prop them up between shoulder and lap. (Too high blocks my view of people in rows behind…).
*I usually have kids keep a tally mark for each correct answer. At the end, I ask them to write their “total correct” score on their whiteboard and show me.
A great way to see who knows what, gauge what still needs more teaching, etc.

Wow. School starts next week, and with our current construction project, each day is an adventure. Yesterday, all my materials were in the middle of my room, two holes has been cut in my wall, ceiling is open in the back corner, ensemble room is torn up and open ceiling and pipes, and EVERYTHING is covered with a thick coat of dust. Today…my family came to help, and we got things moved out of the center of the room and made way for class to happen. Woohoo!! Next step: make it fun again. 😉👏🏻
