Brownsboro Bears Academic Team Our team exists to recognize & utilize BHS students who excel in all forms of academics. Our goal i We are looking for students who want to win.

Commitment from students involve before/after school practices and 4-5 Saturday tournaments throughout the academic year. We require students to be in good standing with teachers in regards to academics and behavior. In addition, we follow the UIL Eligibility schedule and guidelines to participation based on grades. With over 20 events to choose from, we believe there is a place for you here!

State bound!
We just wrapped up regional UIL academic competition at East Texas A&M in Commerce and have a sophomore advancing to state!
Francis Kay placed second in a stacked regional competition in editorial writing to qualify for state in mid May. She is coached by Chad Wilson.
Senior Kaeden Smith placed fifth in ready writing. Senior Liz Flanders competed in extemp speaking and placed third in her room. Both are coached by Whitney Knable.

With her three medals from district on Friday, sophomore Francis Kay has earned enough points this season to become a member of the UIL All-State Journalism Staff! To qualify for the staff, students must have earned 50 points by participating and winning different journalism contests throughout the year. This award shows what a strong season she has had as she now prepares for Region II competition in editorial writing.

Liz Flanders placed third in persuasive to advance to regionals.
Destiny Davis was sixth in poetry.
Hudson Osborn placed 6th in informative and Triston Williams placed 6th in persuasive.

District 15-4A academic day-one results are in and Brownsboro has two students advancing to regionals in late April.
Kaeden Smith placed second in ready writing in order to advance to regionals while sophomore Francis Kay was third in editorial writing to secure her spot in the next round.
On Saturday our speaking events will compete in Athens for their shot at advancing.
More BHS results from day one include:
Science second place team of Bryson Gordon, Shana Douglas, Talon Doane and Kaeden.
Gordon was third best in biology on the day while placing sixth overall in the combined science fields.
Francis had a good day in journalism. She started with a fourth place finish in news writing, took third in editorial and finished fifth in headline writing.
Liz Flanders was sixth in editorial writing.
Riley Smith was fourth in copy editing and fifth in ready writing.
Hazel Martin was fifth in current events while the team was third overall.
Vicky Kwok was sixth in calculator apps while the team was third overall.
The spelling team and the number sense teams both placed third.

It was a strong day for our UIL team on Feb. 21 in Lindale as several students earned medals in competition. Leading the way was sophomore Francis Kay with three medals in journalism. She placed third in news writing, fifth in editorial and fifth in headlines.
Liz Flanders was second in persuasive speaking and fourth in editorial writing.
Danny Anderson was fifth in Nov LD while newcomer Kadence Ivy was sixth.
Talon Doane was fourth in computer science while newcomer Briana Ereman was sixth in spelling.
Vicky Kwok was fourth in calculator while Riley Smith was sixth in copy editing and Kaedan Smith was third in ready writing.
Up next is a tournament on March 18 in Miller Grove ISD before district in late March.

BIG day for our team in Mabank! Several students placed against schools from all classifications.
In speaking events, Elijah Clay placed third in informative ext; Hazel Martin was fifth in prose and Destiny Davis fourth in poetry.
Big day in journalism as sophomore Francis Kay was second in editorial, fourth in news writing and sixth in headline.
Talon Doane placed sixth in number sense and fifth in computer science.
Riley Smith was third in spelling and fourth in ready writing. It was the first time she has attempted the spelling contest.
Jackie Velazquez placed sixth in calculator applications.
Our next meet is scheduled for late February as an entire team. Many of our speakers will be back in action at the end of January.

Starting off the year in Athens today with several medalists. Riley Smith was first in ready writing and fifth in copy editing. Computer science had Talon take first, Jaden M third and Sedric B fourth. Christine B was sixth in social studies and several speaking events are still going.

Congratulations to two outstanding members of our UIL journalism team. Well done Jinjer and Mya.

The UIL has named 245 students to 2025 All-State Journalism Staff.

Students who earn more than 50 points through competition at the local, regional, state and national levels earn acceptance to the All-State Journalism Staff. We celebrate these students for excellence in scholastic journalism from UIL competition to yearbook, newspaper, online news and broadcast journalism competitions.
