A HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to these young martial artists on their promotions from yesterday’s belt test. It has been years since we have tested people to Orange Belt, as it takes several years to get there. So the level of commitment and time that each one of these children, yellow belt, senior yellow, and orange, have exhibited is uncommon and impressive. The test was long, but all of them performed remarkably and made us all very proud!

Two of our incredible students had their last class yesterday before their big move. Briley and Mark have been among our top students for quite some time, formidable, and very hard-working, excellent attitude, and great role models in The Dojo. Thank you guys for being such wonderful students, such great people, and for working so hard.

The great blessing about having so many military people at The Dojo is the wonderful people we meet. Of course, though there are the sad partings when people are stationed elsewhere. But it is a rich experience to have so many wonderful people in our lives as a result. The Gregorek family are truly wonderful people. We were lucky to have them here at The Dojo, and I was blessed to be able to be part of their Martial Arts journey.

We wish them the best of luck on this exciting new chapter in their lives. Whatever academy they end up at in their new location, I have no doubt that they will succeed beyond any expectations. Both of them have extremely bright futures in their training, of that I have no doubt. Briley and Mark will be sorely missed at The Dojo, but we will be very proud as we continue to hear about their accumulation of successes and accomplishments.

A HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to Brendan Melchior on achieving his First Degree Black Belt in Japanese Jujitsu this Saturday!

Words will always fail to express how very proud we are of him. He has been with Sensei Damien and Coach John Miller since he was a child and has been training for over 10 years for this moment. And the youngest anyone is allowed to test for that rank is 18 years old, so as soon as he was able, he threw himself in with everything he is.

And the black belt test for Nagasu Ryu Jujitsu is certainly not an easy process. It is long and grueling and painstaking, but he had a room full of people supporting him and cheering him on the whole time. The test takes over four hours, and he was fully engaged for every minute, showing us all what a true black belt is really made of. Technical acumen demonstrated, techniques delivered in action, with live randori AND hard sparring against other black belts, “fall down seven times, stand up eight” was the true motto.

Now SENSEI Brendan Melchior begins a new journey, one learning and sharing, refinement and discovery. And we at The Dojo are all better for being able to share this journey with him as he continues to advance forward and bring others up in the Art as he was brought up.

😞I don’t want to go to Martial Arts today.😞

We’ve all heard it as parents. They’re tired, they’re distracted, or maybe they’re just not feeling it. And as much as we want to protect them, this is when the real parenting happens. When your child wants to quit Martial Arts — don’t let them.

Not because you want to force a hobby… but because you believe in what it builds:
💥 Discipline
💥 Confidence
💥 Resilience
💥 The power to get back up after being knocked down.

In a world full of distractions, instant gratification, and quitting when things get tough, Martial Arts teaches kids to stick with something even when it’s hard. That training space becomes their proving ground — where they learn how strong they really are and how confident they can be.

They may not understand the lesson now. But years from now, when life gets tough, they’ll have something most other kids don’t: the mindset of a fighter, the courage to keep going, and the strength to never give up.

And here’s the thing: they are not alone.
Your head instructor and their team of amazing leaders are here for them — and for you guiding, mentoring, and showing up every single day to help them grow not just as martial artists, but as people.

So when they want to quit…
Remind them who they are becoming.
And remind yourself — you’re doing them a favor.

A HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to Jasmin Teran on her well-deserved promotion last night in Japanese Jujitsu to the rank of Yellow Belt!
Last night was her last class for a long time as well, as she departed today for Air Force Boot Camp! So an even BIGGER congratulations and all our best wishes and prayers on her decision to serve this amazing country in our military!
Jasmin always makes us very proud, always one of the hardest working students on the Mat, and I have no doubt she will bring the same level of determination to her future in the Air Force and make it wonderful career as a result.
