Today, we’re announcing the Pretty Bird Woman High School Scholarship.

I’ve had the opportunity to achieve both a Bachelors and Masters of Science in Electrical Engineering, but it didn’t come easy. Having the support of community helped both financially and mentally, and we’re excited to provide assistance this year.

Our scholarship will support future Blackfeet Creatives in their journey to express their creativity in the science and arts.

Learning is the only place to find resilience, possibility, and contribution, so let’s get out there and make some change for the better.

Help spread the news! NASA Blackfeet Mars 2020 science kits will be distributed at the Medicine Spring Library on August 10th!

Distribution of the STEM kits that are free for grades 2-12 will happen August 10th at Medicine Spring Library. The kit comes to about $20 worth of STEM oriented supplies. If you participate, you can win $150 worth of science toys. Also, for the school year if the student would like to work with drones and robotics, Contact the teacher for the student’s school if you don’t see your teacher listed contact [email protected]. Since school is virtual, the kids will be able to check out the technology and work with a teacher virtually.

Dear ROADS on Mars teams:

As you are all aware, the coronavirus outbreak has been declared a pandemic and schools are being closed nationwide. We do not want students attempting to complete the challenge and running the risk of being infected. Therefore, to ensure everyone’s safety we are indefinitely suspending the ROADS on Mars Student Challenge. Your efforts will not have been in vain as we WILL restart the program once an all clear is given to health authorities — we will keep the objectives unchanged and there will still be the funded trips to a NASA Center.

We also plan on having a few additional science matter expert talks, so please stay tuned! We will announce upcoming online activities — and the restart of the challenge — as details are available.

Challenge Update

Dear ROADS on Mars teams:

Thank you all for participating in the ROADS on Mars Student Challenge. I have watched in awe the postings that are on social media already. Great job everyone! I hope you continue the challenge — and the new challenge that will be announced later this year.

As you are maybe aware, coronavrius is in the U.S. Out of an abundance of caution and to do our part in limiting the spread of the virus, all challenge events for ROADS on Mars Student Challenge will now be virtual. Some of the hubs will just have teams run through the challenge live on streaming video, others will just have you submit your challenge online, and others may be a hybrid of these approaches. Please check our website regularly for updates: nwessp.org/mars

As for the grand prize, we still intend to make the launch of Mars2020 if the coronavirus threat diminishes before the launch. If it does not diminish, winning teams will still have the opportunity to visit a NASA Center at a later time when the coronavirus threat is diminished — so please keep working at the challenge!

ROADS on Mars is a team challenge for grades 3–12. The challenge follows in the path of the Mars 2020 rover and focuses on guiding students in understanding Rover Observation And Drone Survey.

For the ROADS on Mars Student Challenge, each team is required to create a mission patch that represents the objectives and community values. Our team name, the Blackfeet Rising Stars, describes who we are and our intentions in life. The phrase below the tipi represents our community values. The eagle feathers and stars represents the members of our team, a new teacher and her five remarkable students. The tipi represents the lander we developed for the challenge. The color blue represents two things: Water and the flag of the Blackfeet Nation. The color green represents life. The colors of the Medicine Wheel frame the patch. Mars 2020, not only represents the ROADS on Mars Student Challenge, it also represents that NASA will be sending another rover to Mars this year. A rover our team got to see at JPL last year and our intent to win this challenge, so we can watch the blast off in person!

For the ROADS on Mars Challenge, the new BMS robotic team, Blackfeet Rising Stars, had to use a methane detector to search for life in the local area and collect three samples. Then look for signs of life in those sample with a digital microscope.
