Letting everyone know that we will not have our May meeting this year. We were able to complete our year in April. It was discussed at the meeting to see if our members want to continue to meet each month as we have been or do you want to drop one of the months. Those at the meeting as mixed emotions, so I would love to hear from anyone that wants to make their voice heard, WHAT DO YOU WANT TO DO? Please send me an email so that the executive board can use this information and decide this summer. I want to do what all of you want to do. State bylaws say that we only are required to have 5 meetings, but when we don’t meet then we miss our friends.

If you have any suggestions about programs for next year, please let me or Claudia Furlow know, we had some great suggestions at the meeting.

Please be safe and healthy this summer and remember, if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact me. Enjoy family and friends and make lots of memories.

Just Show Up: The Story of Richard Roberts

Richard Roberts was born and raised in Red River County, Texas, where he attended a small school in Annona and graduated in 1957. He was the youngest of four siblings, two of whom also worked in Texas schools.

He attended East Texas State University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree and met his wife, Linda. They married in 1959. Richard began his career in education in 1961 as a math teacher in Bovina, Texas. Like many young teachers of that time, he drove morning and afternoon bus routes, as well as buses for school trips.

He later earned his mid-management certification from West Texas State University and became principal of Sanford-Fritch High School in 1969. In 1972, he moved to Loop, Texas, where he served as principal while Linda taught elementary school and their daughter, Teresa, began second grade. After earning his superintendent certification from Texas Tech University, Richard became superintendent of Loop ISD. He and Linda retired from Loop ISD in 1998, though Richard continued to serve as an interim superintendent in four West Texas school districts.

Richard’s involvement with the Texas Retired Teachers Association (TRTA) began shortly after retirement, when he and Linda were encouraged by fellow retirees to attend local meetings. What began as simple participation quickly grew into deeper involvement, thanks in large part to the encouragement and friendships he found along the way.

“If you can just get people to join and show up, the rest will come,” Richard said. “That’s what happened to me. I wasn’t planning on doing anything.”

Judy K informed us about what happened at the House Of Delegates in March, announced the new district officers that will take office in June and awards handed out.
We drew for 3 prizes and the half and half donation.

Hello everyone, Happy Easter to everyone. I am excited to give you the updates on our first ever Virtual house of Delegates that took place on March 25, 2026. I know that some of you may have received a letter about your physicians that are in the Texas Tech (UMC) network and them not being in network after April 1, 2026. I hope they will still resolve the issue, but things are not looking great at this point. If you have questions, please call your physician to see if they will still see you and bill the insurance. This would be on an out of network basis, which means more cost to you. If you have questions on this, bring them to the meeting or give me a call. Please come with suggestions on programs that you might be interested in hearing about for next year.

Make plans to join us starting at 11:00am in the Noon Lions Room at the Brownfield Senior Center.

Breaking News…The Speaker of the Texas House Dustin Burrows released that chamber’s interim legislative charges today. Charge #2 under the Pensions, Investments, and Financial Services Committee is as follows:

Teacher Retirement System of Texas Review: Review the actuarial soundness of the
Teacher Retirement System of Texas, including current contribution levels, defined benefit
plan assumptions, and projected liabilities to ensure the long-term financial stability of the
system. Evaluate the impact of basing employer contributions on total payroll, options to
increase parity in the contribution rates for all entities, and the impact of benefit
enhancements.

TRTA has a long time working relationship with the Texas House and its members. We are grateful to Speaker Burrows for including the interim charge related to TRS.

TRTA members and all TRS retirees, we must be ready to educate candidates for office, share our stories, and build strong partnerships to protect YOUR TRS.

TRTA is already engaged on these important topics. Please add your voice and presence to our membership so that we can protect your retirement and find ways to reduce the impact of inflation on your pocketbook!

TRTA made history yesterday with our first ever Virtual House of Delegates across the state! What an exciting and fun day for our members. TRTA State Officers was elected and installed. We voted on 3 amendments and passed a motion for a dues increase starting in June 2027. District 17 had about 70 members in attendance and then we celebrated everything we have accomplished in the past 4 years. Dan Jackson installed our new District 17 Officers for 2026 2028.Thank you all for your support and showing up to be a part of TRTA history. If you are not a member of TRTA and a chapter, contact an officer and join the fun!

Good morning, I wanted to remind everyone about our upcoming meeting this coming Tuesday, March 3, 2026. We will meet starting at 11:00am in the Noon Lions Room at the Brownfield Senior Center. We have lots of information to share with you about the upcoming Virtual House of Delegates and we want to invite anyone that wants to come see how our TRTA State Officers are elected and to see how the By-Laws are adopted. This is a great opportunity to come to the first ever virtual house of delegates. Even better is that you don’t have to travel far, just to Lubbock. If you are interested in being a part of history, join us for a fun event. Lunch will be provided by the district, and we will celebrate afterwards. This event will be at the Region 17 Service Center in Lubbock. You must let Judy Kennedy know if you want to attend, for lunch count, no later than March 13, 2026.

Great meeting today!
Had our meeting and then Beighlee Franks spoke to the group about REFUGE, it’s equine therapy.
They have an awesome service that works with folks using horses.
The money that is donated goes to them, they receive no government help, so donations are always welcome. They also need volunteers, need to be at least 18 years of age. I have included informational pictures.

Hello everyone, Welcome to 2026 and wintertime in Texas! I hope everyone is safe and staying inside. We don’t want anyone to get hurt or be sick. I wanted to remind everyone that we will have our first meeting of 2026 next Tuesday, February 3rd starting at 11:00am at the Brownfield Senior Center. We will be meeting in the Noon Lions Room in the West Hall instead of the dining room. You can come in the west side door or in from the front door. We will have a great program this month from Anita Ropiejko with Refuge Services, all about equine therapy. We will also have updates Insurance and the upcoming Virtual House of Delegates.

****** A reminder that it if time to turn in your volunteer hours for 2025. You can send them to me or to Linda Gauger at [email protected] This will be any hours from January 2025 until December 31, 2025 and it can be any hours that you did not get paid for. If you are caring for a grandchild or a spouse or a family member or any volunteer time at church or any organization. You can even count your meeting time each with us. We need to report as many hours as possible. You can count up to 12 hours per day. Please send those in as soon as possible or bring them to the meeting next week.
