What happens during a Discovery Flight? Here's what to expect. ✈️

Think of it as your introduction to the flight training experience. During your Discovery Flight at McAir Aviation, a Certified Flight Instructor will help guide you through the foundational elements of pilot training: pre-flight planning, conducting an aircraft walk around, and understanding how pilots prepare before takeoff. Once airborne, you may have the chance to take the controls from the left seat and experience the responsiveness of the aircraft firsthand. It's a meaningful way to explore what flight training involves and whether pursuing aviation flight training feels right for you.

When you start looking at flight schools, you'll hear about Part 61 and Part 141.

So what's the difference? 🛩️ Part 61 flight schools offer flexible, self paced training, while Part 141 follows an FAA-approved syllabus with defined stages and oversight. Because of that approval, the FAA allows some certificates to be tested for with fewer minimum flight hours under Part 141 than under Part 61. At McAir Aviation, we train under Part 141 because that structure works in your favor. Every stage builds on the last, with regular checks along the way, so you're not just logging hours, you're progressing in your flight training with a plan. Your instructors know exactly where you are in the syllabus and what you need next, which helps keep your training focused and consistent. For students working toward opportunities in aviation, that kind of organized path can make the training journey smoother and more efficient.

At McAir Aviation we are proud to have a Redbird Flight Simulator to help train our students. ✈

The Redbird MCX is ideal for any flight school, providing enhanced training from student pilots to professional crew. The dual controls of the MCX allow an instructor, instructor-in-training, or co-pilot to perform maneuvers from the right seat. During initial pilot training, an instructor can demonstrate maneuvers from the right seat before the student tries their hand, just like you would do in a real aircraft.

What does FAA examining authority actually mean? ✈️

Reaching the milestones to take your check ride usually means traveling to an outside Designated Pilot Examiner. Often, that examiner is someone unfamiliar with how or where you trained. McAir Aviation has earned examining authority, which means that final step for your check ride can happen in-house. The practical test is conducted at McAir by a designated examiner, using the same standards you trained under. It's a more streamlined path to help you continue to progress in your flight training, from your first lesson toward earning a certificate. ✨

Wondering what it actually takes to earn your private pilot certificate? ✈️

The path to becoming a pilot breaks down into distinct phases, each with specific FAA requirements. First, you'll complete ground school, studying aviation fundamentals and regulations. Then comes flight training, where you'll train to log flight hours with an instructor, build toward your solo flight, and prepare for your check ride. You'll also train to pass the FAA written exam, covering everything from aerodynamics to flight operations.

Finally, you'll need complete a practical check ride with an FAA examiner. The FAA requires a minimum of 40 hours of flight time for most aspiring pilots, though many take 70+ hours to help train their proficiency before testing.
