Iwa Dojo, a non-profit traditional Okinawan martial arts organization, was founded in 1995 by Paul and Barbara Gehring. We train Goju Ryu and Kobudo

Iwa Dojo, formally Boulder Kodokan, was founded by Paul and Barbara Sensei for a very simple reason; they wanted other people to train with. They have been blessed over the years with students that had the dedication to train to the level of black belt, providing them with not just people to train with, but wonderful people to learn from as well. One of the strengths of Iwa Dojo is the ambiance cr

In November of this past year we had the honor of hosting our Goju Ryu Karate teacher, Kuba Yoshio Sensei. A 10th degree black belt, he is a master of his art who is dedicated to sharing what he has learned along his path with his students. I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to learn from him myself, and learn how to teach by watching him instruct my students and my family in Okinawan martial arts.

We had so much fun as a family teaching the Broomfield Rec summer camps. A great way to introduce little ones to martial arts and our kids to the joy of teaching!

When I spoke with Itokazu Sensei a couple weeks ago, he mentioned to me that he'd like to see more Shinbukai material out on the web. "You'd like me to post more videos?" I asked him. "Yes, I see all this other stuff out there, and I wonder, where are all my Shinbukai students?" he responded. So, we will post vids from time to time going forward to share what we are working on in the dojo with Sensei and with, well, The World. We are so excited to be able to get together indoors now to train together, even if it is behind masks, and I hope you will also enjoy watching snippets of our training.

We've only had a few sessions back together since we reopened the dojo, but doing kata together and training the bunkai felt like getting back on a bike!

Shushi no kun kata is being done by Barbara, Garrett, Lavi, Maelo and me. We are very sad to be losing Maelo as he moves to Chicago, but very excited that he will be opening a new Shinbukai branch there. We have high expectations for Maelo, who is a great martial artist and person.

Shushi no kun bunkai is done by Barbara and Garrett. For those who don't know, Barbara has been training Goju and Matayoshi Kobudo with me since 1992 (so, longer than we've been married!) and Garrett started training Matayoshi Kobudo with us in 1995. I'm grateful to have had two such great people and martial artists to train with all these years!!
