Check out Larimer County Extension's tips on seed shopping for Colorado gardens!
Shopping for seeds? Make sure to check out the estimated “days to harvest” listed on the packet! We have a short-ish growing season here on the Front Range with late frosts in the spring and early frosts in the fall.
If you’re on the Front Range of Colorado and the seed packet says :
· Less than 80 days to harvest: You’re likely going to get to harvest before the first frost.
· 80-100 days: In most seasons, you’ll be able to harvest before the first frost.
· 100+ days: Each season is different, but the odds of beating the first frost may not be in your favor. This is where season extension techniques can be helpful.
If you live in higher elevations, you’re safest sticking to 60-70 days to harvest.
Not sure when you start counting? If you start your seeds inside, start the clock when they are transplanted outside. If you direct sow (plant seeds in the ground outside), start counting when you place the seed in the ground.
As always, you can email the Larimer County Master Gardeners if you have a question about seeds: [email protected]
Volunteer Spotlight!
Natasha completed her Master Gardener apprenticeship in 2023. She is an active volunteer and instructor for CSU Extension Broomfield’s Family Learn & Grow classes (https://col.st/dYCw5), which give youth and their caregivers a chance to get their hands dirty in the garden and learn about growing their own food. Natasha’s favorite part of the Master Gardener program is getting to share the joy of gardening with the next generation.
A epidemiologist by training, Natasha worked in the Department of Defense for 10 years as a Health Promotion Scientist. She currently homeschools her elementary-aged children and hopes to encourage families to get out in the garden together.
Thank you, Natasha!
