A Place To Grow
I take care of small group of children in my home ranging from infancy through elementary school. My philosophy of education is that learning should be fun and exciting. Also, the benefit of a small in-home childcare is the nurturing

and loving environment that the child receives. During the course of our day we play with age-appropriate toys, blocks, puzzles and games. The children, depending on their age, participate in art activities and written learning time. The work that they do, prepares them for kindergarten. They learn their alphabet, shapes, colors, numbers from 1-30, site words, letter sounds and nursery rhymes. They learn to write their name, numbers, alphabet and draw their shapes. I teach according to their abilities. During that time we read stories, music time, and create an art activity each day that relates to the topic. During the week we take walks, play in the yard or go on field trips. Every week we visit the local library for their toddler program. Twice a month we visit the Springfield Mall for the Giggle Gang program.

Look at all the amazing creations that the creative kids made this week. We colored with oil pastels and painted over with baby oil. The kids picked rocks from the creek and decorated them with acrylic paint. Lastly, we decorated a fish made from craft sticks and painted the ocean with watercolors. We enjoyed our afternoon staying cool inside, playing games together “kids pick”.

What an amazing time we had last week. It was so great to explore a different hiking trail each morning and create beautiful art in the afternoons. The kids had a great time pointing out different things in nature. We found a wing to a butterfly, a hop toad, Milkweed plants with caterpillars, slugs and a ladybug. We saw different types of butterflies and on one hike the saw a deer running in the woods. Each hike we took had a creek to investigate. We each took turns skipping rocks to see who could get the highest number of skips. The kids had fun climbing trees and large rocks. On one hike we found a letterbox. We decided to create our own letterbox and leave them on the next trails we hike. We can come back at a later time and see how many people found ours and signed their names. We are hoping for more morning hikes before school begins, as long as the weather cooperates.

I’m sorry I don’t have more pictures to post showing the process of each child’s picture but, it was a little more complicated to create than I thought. Overall, they each turned out terrific. A gorgeous day to spend the entire time outside playing, dancing, exploring art and having lunch.
The original idea I saw online used string, acrylics and a paper clip. After trying with the first child’s picture I decided to replicate the string art from the day before using tempera paint for the other projects. We used color card stock for the ocean, some color pencilEd some shells and chose their whales to look more like shadows, while the others glued spots and eyes on theirs. I love how each are a little different and all look beautiful. I want to try the original art idea again with the kids, I just need different paint bottles to apply the paint on the string better. Stay tuned..
