Chef Dad's Table

Chef Dad's Table Food and Fun, Learning and Fun, Friends and Fun…that’s Chef Dad’s Table at The Center for Learning When we measure ingredients, we are using our math skills.

Our mission is to provide a safe and engaging place for our students to learn and have fun. Whether it is to strengthen their academic skills or to explore their creative side, Chef Dad’s Table offers our students a variety of extra-curricular classes and activities, both in-person and virtually online. Our classes teach lifelong skills, build confidence and self-esteem, and introduce our students

to a variety of vocations and opportunities that are available to them later in life. Our students are introduced to volunteering and philanthropy through our efforts to help combat food insecurity and increase social harmony in our communities. We currently enroll students in our Cooking Classes in three age groups, ages 2-5, 6-10, and 11-18. Your children will join our talented instructors in a professional kitchen and classroom as we explore and learn about Types of Foods, Preparation Methods, Recipe Math, Appetizers and Entrees, Baking and Pastries, Weights and Measures, Sanitation and Safety, Knife Skills, Baking Basics, International Cuisine and Cultures, Holiday and Events in the Kitchen, and so much more. Our youngest cooks will be engaged in a "Storybook and Cook" class learning and exploring as they get their hands dirty making and baking tasty treats. Our students don’t even realize they are learning; they think it’s just about having fun and eating great food! When baking, there are chemical reactions going on and studying the cuisine and culture of different regions of the world is a terrific geography lesson. Introduction to Cooking I

Potatoes were first cultivated by the Incas in Peru around 8000 BC to 5000 BC, and today is the fourth largest food crop in the world. These starchy tubers belong to the nightshade family and are grown in over 100 countries worldwide. They are more healthy for you than you might think. A medium potato contains more potassium than a banana, and is packed with vitamin C. An 8-ounce baked or boiled potato has only about 100 calories and is completely fat-free. Potatoes also give us chips, French fries and vodka. The other vegetables really need to step up their game!

Sage comes from the Latin word salvare, which means "to heal" or "to save". The scientific genus name for sage is Salvia. It traces back to old Roman terms for health and salvation. In the 17th century, Dutch traders valued sage so much that they traded three to four pounds of Chinese tea for just one pound of European sage. And in the 1800s, Americans rubbed fresh sage leaves directly onto their teeth to make them whiter. A weird tradition about sage is that folklore claims it is bad luck to plant sage yourself. Tradition dictates that a friend must plant it in your garden for it to bring good luck!

Filet mignon is French for “cute fillet” or “dainty fillet.” In French, filet mignon may be called filet de boeuf, which translates to beef fillet in English. Although the name is French, the term Filet Mignon was originally used by the American writer O. Henry. In his 1906 book, “The Four Million,” the name of the steak was used several times and represented the symbol of a luxury dish and romance. Since the filet mignon comes from the most tender portion of the tenderloin, it's one of the most prized cuts of beef, that why this steak can be very expensive!

So, what happened? Americans moved into the cities where they had neither the space nor the time to plant gardens. Mega agribusinesses bought up small family farms, and we got our food from all over, usually traveling long distances to reach our local stores. Back in the 1970s, the "farm-to-table" movement started small. But people soon discovered that fresh vegetables grown locally not only tasted better but are also more nutritious. These days, we have a choice of many farm-to-table restaurants, and have rediscovered the benefits of getting our food from local farmers' markets!
