All of this before your first page of curriculum please😬

ā€œWaitingā€ for them to be ready to read? Do these things in the meantime and it will be soooo much easier.

There is so much that pre-readers and early readers need to be doing to get ready that is not on a worksheet.

Studies have shown that it takes approximately 400 repetitions to learn something new 😳 but we can shorten that to 10-20 repetitions if it’s in the form of PLAY?!

But… and this is big…. the play needs to have focus.

It looks a whole lot like play, but the play is intentionally focusing on building specific skills.

If you are sick of the moaning and groaning that comes along with completing page after page of curriculum in your homeschool, let’s meet!

I’m available for planning sessions that will help you make your homeschool more fun and simple ways to provide
MORE REPETITION (so needed) without it feeling repetitive.

These planning sessions are called ā€œChoice Navigation Sessionsā€ and are always available at
https://booksuzanne.as.me

They are also available for reimbursement or direct pay with Step Up Scholarships.

What do you wish you could get help with?

From teaching for 17 years in schools to now homeschooling my own, believe me I’ve been there and have an idea that could help.

ā€œOh reading groups! So is this a group that reads books and then gets together to talk about them?ā€

No, this is different. Instead, we get to the root cause of comprehension issues instead.

Low comprehension almost always means there’s some word reading errors that the reader isn’t even noticing themselves 😬

This is your hint to listen to your child read out loud often, to make sure they are catching those errors.

Comprehension is not separate from the work of reading words.

ā€œSegmenting, or pulling sounds apart, is highly correlated with comprehension.ā€ — Nora Chahbazi, EBLI Founder

When learners can identify the individual sounds in a spoken word and connect those sounds to spellings, they have a clearer path to accurate word reading. As reading becomes more accurate and automatic, more attention can be available for understanding the text.

That is why EBLI integrates phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, spelling, writing, and handwriting instead of treating them as isolated skills.

Yes, we’re laughing - but confidently reading big unfamiliar words is actually a teachable skill.

If you have a reader like this too I’ve got a group for that!

I cannot even begin to tell you how common this is! In my experience, I’ve seen it almost across the board that these kids can’t spell 🫣

It’s totally not your fault either! When these kids were learning to read the curriculum companies and schools had all lost their minds and were teaching kids to rely on invented spelling (ie making it up and going by what looks right or sounds right)

Ask them to spell words like musician, education, competition, happiness, responsible, significant, and photograph.

Did they do any erasing because it didn’t ā€œlook right?ā€
Are all the sounds in the word it’s just inaccurate?

We can totally target this in my spelling group.

The goal was never memorization, once words get longer ā€œwrite the sounds you hearā€ becomes less and less sufficient. Students need to understand syllable structure, spelling conventions, morphology and meaningful word parts.

Message me, but move quickly. I’m finalizing spots early this week.

As always, this class and everything I do is available for direct pay with Step Up funds.
