A great reminder of the beautiful things that come from reading books aloud.
A few weekends ago, I was sitting around with a group of friends and we got to talking about books we had loved when were kids.
Lots of different titles were discussed: Harriet the Spy, The Secret Garden, Anne of Green Gables, Winnie-the-Pooh, Island of the Blue Dolphins, Henry Huggins, Fantastic Mr. Fox, James and the Giant Peach.
We talked about how we had discovered the books we loved, and the phrase that got repeated again and again was “I remember my teacher reading it to the class.”
I wish those teachers could have heard us talking about books read to us more than 50 years ago, about how much we loved them and how we will never forget them.
You teachers out there (and you librarians, too): thank you for this gift you give every day.
I promise: those kids won’t forget the books. Or you.
And: thank you, Mrs. Boyette, for reading Island of the Blue Dolphins to our second grade class.

One of my favorite books about the Lunar New Year!
The number one most important thing I do with my students is communicate my respect for them
and for their minds. I show an interest in their interests, and build the things that they care about about into our sessions. Showing respect for and a genuine interest in my students is the foundation, the platform, for everything else that we do together.
I start with a conversation with you, the parent, to find out about your child. What are his strengths and struggles? What does she love to do outside of school? What is her learning and social style? What kinds of books does he like to read? I take all these things into consideration when I design the tutoring session.
I customize sessions to reflect your child's interests and build on her strengths. I want each child to feel excited about and in charge of her own reading and writing and to associate reading and writing with joy and pleasure.
I often have children bring books from home that they enjoy. I also bring books to the session, and engage children in the selection of books from the
library shelves. Sessions may also include story dictation and games which allow them to build on word recognition and vocabulary development.
By reading and writing on a regular basis about things that are meaningful to them, children can experience more ease with literacy in a school setting.
