REPOST FROM NCNW Headquarters - Black Women’s Equal Pay Day highlights the reality behind the numbers: Black women must work into the following year to earn what non-Hispanic white men earned the year before. With Black women earning approximately 65 cents on the dollar in full-time, year-round positions—and about 63 cents when all workers are included—the wage gap continues to impact economic security, wealth building, and opportunities for future generations. Today, we call on policymakers to strengthen workplace protections and create systems that promote equal pay, accountability, and opportunity... Thank you NCNW for all the work you have done over the years and for continuing to inform us of how to push towards equality.

The “Hidden Skillset” of Leadership

You do not need a law degree, a political background, or a traditional corporate résumé to lead effectively.

Many women are already practicing high-level leadership every day through motherhood, caregiving, and managing the needs of their families. The problem is that this work is often treated as personal responsibility instead of recognized as real leadership experience.

Here are three transferable skills that matter more than people realize:

1. Managing limited resources:
Mothers regularly make decisions about time, money, transportation, food, childcare, and competing household needs, often with very little room for error. That is resource management. It requires prioritization, budgeting, contingency planning, and making difficult trade-offs. These are the same skills required to manage public programs, organizational budgets, and community initiatives.

2. Communicating clearly with different audiences:
A woman deeply involved in her family may communicate with children, teachers, doctors, relatives, service providers, employers, and community leaders, all of whom require a different approach. That ability to explain, listen, advocate, and adjust your message is foundational to effective public leadership.

3. Coordinating people with competing needs:
Families do not operate with one schedule, one personality, or one priority. Keeping everyone moving requires negotiation, conflict resolution, planning, emotional intelligence, and follow-through. Those are the same skills leaders use to manage teams, build coalitions, serve on boards, and bring different groups toward a shared goal.

The biggest myth about leadership is that experience only counts when someone paid you for it or gave you an official title.

Sometimes the woman who believes she is “just keeping the family together” is already budgeting, organizing, advocating, negotiating, and leading every single day.

The question is not whether she has leadership experience.

The question is whether she has been taught to recognize it.

As a the newest board member, I want to take a moment to say "thank you" not just from me, but from our entire current board team.

Thank you to every former board member, participant, trainer, supporter, donor, speaker, volunteer, and friend who helped build Dare to Run into what it is today.

Nine years does not happen by accident. It happens because people believed in the mission. People showed up. People gave their time, their expertise, their networks, their resources, and their encouragement. And because of that, Dare to Run has been able to create space for women to learn, grow, and step into their power.

Today, we are celebrating the work that has already been done , and looking ahead to what comes next.

As the current board, we are excited about this new chapter. We are honoring the legacy while also building for the future. That means continuing to create opportunities for women to gain the tools, confidence, and community they need to lead in every space they enter.
