The fun keeps flowing! This week our littlest campers (2–5) are learning about Sounds of the City, while our 6+ crew enjoys one more week of Music and Movement. Sunny days, happy faces, and so much joy to go around. 💚🌳☀️

During our Carnival celebration this year, we had the opportunity to welcome Leslie - a Bed-Stuy artist, printmaker, and founder of Leslie Diuguid - for a workshop session. Middle Schoolers learned about screen printing and printed all the limited-edition t-shirts we had this year.

Research shows that natural daylight in classrooms can support children’s learning in meaningful ways - not by changing what they learn, but by improving the conditions that help them learn best.

When children spend their day in natural sunlight, they often experience better sleep patterns, improved focus, steadier mood, and stronger engagement. All of these factors come together to support attention, memory, and readiness to learn.

In other words, sunlight doesn’t teach the lesson - but it helps children feel more alert, balanced, and present for it.

We see this every day in our classrooms, and learning areas: brighter spaces, brighter thinking, and children who feel grounded and ready to explore.

Few days ago, our Kindergarteners visited the First Quincy Street Community Garden, and got a firsthand look at all the effort, education, creativity, and joy it takes to keep a community garden growing.

After walking through the neighborhood as a class, we arrived with curious minds, ready to explore. Alongside the wonderful members of the garden, we searched for flowers, watered the fruits and vegetables, and pitched in to help care for this special green space.

It’s all part of our ongoing work to help our kids build a rich, well-rounded understanding of spaces in the neighborhood - and the people who keep them thriving.

Here’s something we know to be true after more than 20 years seeing it: the deepest learning happens in the messy middle: the drafts, the math worked out loud, the study that changes shape halfway through because a child asked a question nobody saw coming. That’s where curiosity grows. That’s where persistence is built. That’s where kids learn to think.
So we celebrate all of it — the trying, the rethinking, the brave “let me start over”, because we see children who learn to love the process become learners for life. Every question, every “wait, what if” is building something that lasts.
This is how we teach. This is why it works!

Congratulations to our 8th grade graduates!

Yesterday we celebrated this incredible group as they closed one chapter and stepped into the next. We’ve watched them grow, lead, and light up our hallways, and we couldn’t be prouder.

To our graduates: you’ll always have a home here. Go be wonderful.
To their families: thank you for trusting us with your (now our) people.
And to our teachers and staff: thank you for the years of care, patience, and love that brought them here. This day was yours too.

The city has been our classroom this spring!
Every grade has been out exploring New York - preschoolers, lower grades, and our older students alike. Museums, parks, subway platforms, our own block in Bed-Stuy. Real places, real questions, real learning.

These trips weren’t just outings. They were chances for our students to touch, see, hear, taste, and smell the world around them - to observe, collaborate, problem-solve, and ask the kinds of questions that make learning come alive.
The classroom is wherever curiosity takes them. 💚🌳
