It's Modal Monday!

In English, modal verbs are "helper verbs" that express conditions like ability, permission, obligation, suggestions, or possibility. Basic English modals are: can, could, may, might, must, shall, should, will, and would.

There are three things to remember about modals:

1. Never add -s/es: Modals do not change form based on the subject.
Correct: He can swim.
Incorrect: He cans swim.

2. Use the base verb: Follow them with the base form of the main verb (no "to").
Correct: You must go.
Incorrect: You must to go.

3. Direct negatives: Add "not" directly after the modal (e.g., should not). You should not go to work if you feel sick.

Friday Fun Fact!

Did you know that.....?

English is derived from West Germanic language, which originated from Old Frisian, Old English, and Old Saxon. It came to Britain when Anglo-Saxon migrants arrived in the 5th to 7th centuries AD. That was 1500 years ago!

Over the years, the English language has been influenced by different cultures and languages, such as Latin, French, Dutch, and Afrikaans.

Even today, English is still changing and evolving. It is the dominant language in the UK, Ireland, the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and many smaller former British colonies.
