This last installment of Lutheran Theology Group was quite awesome. We talked about what Bonhoeffer was thinking about in prison, and it inspired some really great conversation.

This coming week, we are going to look at liturgical theology. Now, liturgical theology is not Lutheran per se, but it is at the core of St. Lydia's theology, and so I thought it would be good to explore a text on it.

We will be reading a chapter from Aidan Kavanaugh's book On Liturgical Theology. The special thing about this text is that it was the first thing Emily Scott had me read when she supervised me as an intern last year.

Lutheran Theology group is back this coming Tuesday! In our times together, we read short pieces of text from some great theologians and discuss their ideas together, all around a table with drinks and food.

This time, we will be looking at Karl Barth's Church Dogmatics, volume 1, part 1, chapter 1. Our question: "How do we speak of God?" O_O

I am so very excited!

Tomorrow, come hang out, eat, drink, and read Kierkegaard at St. Lydia's!

This is part of the summer Lutheran Theology group, where we read short pieces of theological writing from famous theologians of the Lutheran tradition. No homework, no pre-meeting reading; we do all the reading together.

We had a lot of fun in the last meeting when we read from Kierkegaard's Philosophical Fragments, and navigated his tricky jargon. In this meeting, we'll be reading from Kierkegaard's Attack upon 'Christendom'. He has a pretty ruthless criticism of the Danish church that carries a lot of weight for the U.S. today.

I'm real excited for this one!

This Tuesday, come hang out, eat, drink, and read Kierkegaard at St. Lydia's!

This is part of the summer Lutheran Theology group, where we read short pieces of theological writing from some famous theologians of the Lutheran tradition. No homework, no pre-meeting reading; we do all the reading together.

We had a lot of fun in the last two meetings when we read from Martin Luther himself. In this next meeting, we'll be reading from Kierkegaard's Philosophical Fragments and asking the question, Was it easier for Jesus' disciples to have faith than it is for us today?

Next Tuesday, May 23rd, is the first meeting of the Lutheran Theology group! 7pm at St. Lydia's.

We'll be looking at Luther's Preface to Paul's Epistle to the Romans! (I will bring the reading.)

I am calling it the "Drop-in Lutheran Theology group" since it requires no commitment, no pre-reading, and no homework. Come as you can, however much you can, and we'll do all the reading together. It's gonna be GREAT! :D

Come to the Biblical Exegesis Workshop at St. Lydia's!

You’re walking on a subway platform when you come across a folded piece of paper on the ground. You open it and see that it’s a love letter. You have many questions. What was the purpose of the letter? Is this unrequited love? Are they dating? Are they married? How do they feel about each other? These are just some of the questions you could have about the text. You examine closely everything about it, from the content of the letter to how it was folded and where it was dropped, so as to extract as much information as you can.

What you are practicing is exegesis. Exegesis is a critical investigation of a text with the goal of interpreting it and explaining its content, and it is essential for understanding the Bible. It might seem like you need a degree to exegete the Bible, but you really don't! Anyone can practice exegesis if they are shown how—and that will be the purpose of the Biblical Exegesis Workshop led by Jack Holloway.

It will start with the Gospel of Luke and will consist of six sessions. If you come, you do not have to do any reading outside of the reading done in the workshop itself!

It will take place on the following Thursdays at 7:30 pm at St. Lydia's:
2/2, 2/9, 2/16, 3/9, 3/16, and 3/30.
