Earlier today, Upper School students and colleagues heard a powerful presentation from senior Charlie M. about the importance of educating peers on what it means to build a community that embraces people of all identities. Charlie spoke about the prevalence and impact of homophobia and transphobia, and the critical importance of active allyship. His vision includes Jog4Justice, a 5K road race planned for this spring that partners BFS and the Human Rights Campaign Foundation. Students also heard from Dolores Covrigaru, an HRC board member, who shared reflections on her decades-long commitment to supporting the LGBTQIA+ community. In closing, Charlie recognized the many people who have inspired him, as well as the LGBTQIA+ young people he has never met. As Charlie meaningfully expressed, “Their lives are worth fighting for, and I want to fight for them.”

Earlier today, BFS colleagues had the opportunity to hear a powerful presentation on masculinity and toxic masculinity from Randy Maldonado, a licensed clinical social worker with more than 12 years of experience translating attachment science and family systems work into practice grounded in economic and cultural complexity. Randy explored key aspects of child development, along with healthy expressions of identity and behavior in children. Next Tuesday, October 20, Randy will return to speak with BFS families. We encourage you to join us for this important conversation! RSVP information can be found in ‘The Weekly’.

BFS pauses today to celebrate Indigenous Peoples, cultures, and contributions. Grounded in our Quaker values, Brooklyn Friends School acknowledges that we inhabit the unceded ancestral lands of the Lenape, known as Lenapehoking. This truth invites us to move beyond acknowledgment toward relationship, reciprocity, and action.
