In partnership with Head of School Crissy Cáceres and BFS Assistant Head of School for Quakerism and Community Well-Being Jason Novak, Rodney Glasgow of Friends Council on Education delivered a rousing presentation to our colleagues this week. He explored the history of Quakerism, its enduring relevance in today’s society, and the ways in which it continues to shape our school community. For nearly 100 years, FCE has supported the success and sustainability of Quaker schools, educators, and leaders. BFS is proud to be one of just 24 Quaker schools in the USA serving students from age 2 through 12th grade.

This week, BFS Upper School colleagues are participating in an immersive, 3-day workshop led by instructors from the International Baccalaureate Organization. “As an IB World School, the BFS Diploma Programme aims to ‘develop internationally minded people who, recognizing their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet, help to create a better and more peaceful world,’” said Nitya York, Assistant Head of School for Academics and Interim Head of Upper School. “Beautifully mirroring our own BFS mission and values, this week we focused on bringing the IB mission and pedagogy to life through deliberate learning, reflection, and planning for the school year ahead. We are so grateful to have several highly-skilled and knowledgeable trainers with us from the IBO this week.”

Our new colleagues capped off their first week at BFS with a team building activity, led by Assistant Head of School for Quakerism and Community Well-Being, Jason Novak. The topic was perseverance, the activity was the “Cup Game”, and the music was courtesy of the late, great Dolly Parton. Colleagues performed a repeated sequence of claps and taps on the cup, and other movements in this meaningful and joyful experience, as Head of School Crissy Cáceres cheered on the group. Next week, we proudly welcome back all of our colleagues!

Our hearts are heavy at Brooklyn Friends School. Camilla Church Greene, who entered BFS when she arrived for kindergarten in 1947, and whose presence has been woven into the fabric of our community, passed away earlier this month. She was the first African-American student to graduate from Brooklyn Friends School, and that is only one distinction that informed her vast accomplishments in our community. This week, Brooklyn Friends School is delighted to welcome its newest colleagues into our community. Among the many meaningful experiences that have marked their introduction to BFS was a welcome presentation from Head of School Crissy Cáceres, during which she underscored the essential role that love plays in shaping and sustaining our community. “Without designing for love, we have no business being in the business of children,” she said boldly. “Without a commitment to designing for love actively, we have no business calling ourselves a place of safety, community, stewardship, peace, equity, and simplicity.”

Three members of the Class of 2026—Taj Greene, Ty Stark, and Lucas Bonetto—did not wait until they were alums before winning the 3v3 Alumni Basketball Tournament during Reunion26 this past spring. Earlier this week, before heading off to college, the trio stopped into school to claim their first-place prize—BFS Varsity Jackets! The biggest question now is—will they come back and defend their title next year? We hope so, and congratulate them on a well-deserved victory.

Few musicians have dared to step into the creative space once occupied by legendary composers, such as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Johann Sebastian Bach. Who, among us, would be so bold? The answer: Robert Levin—a pianist, composer, and scholar of formidable range—who once walked the halls of BFS, and went on to complete Mozart’s ‘Requiem’. Today, we flash back to our amazing and joyful Dance Showcase, which was performed by our Grades 2–4 dancers! We celebrate the creativity, collaboration, and confidence our students shared on stage, as well as the leadership of Dance Teacher Mariana Ranz and guest teaching artists Mamoudou Konate, Sayon Camara, and Michel Papach Kouakou of TIKoRO’. Thank you to everyone who helped make this celebration of movement, music, and community so memorable. We hope you enjoy these photos from the big day!
