Brooklyn Children’s Theatre provides youth with a safe, supportive, and nurturing environment to discover and hone their talents and life skills through the collaborative art of musical theatre. Through the rehearsal process students learn discipline, respect, and the value of hard work and a positive attitude. Through ensemble work, students build a strong community in which they learn commitment

, trust and how to depend on one another. Through live performances, students develop confidence and learn to take risks. We aim to create a supportive, dynamic, and inclusive learning community where each child’s individual self-worth, creativity, and talents are celebrated, where each child wants to contribute his or her own unique gifts to strengthen and sustain the vibrancy of this community. We envision a world where all children have access to theatre. We especially seek the participation of students who have a gift to give the art of theatre who would not otherwise have theater or performance opportunities, due to economic or cultural barriers or lack of resources in their schools and communities. BCT fulfills an underfunded need in which all students are welcome, regardless of their economic situation. No child has ever been refused for an inability to pay.

- current or prospective first-generation college student
- member of a historically marginalized community

From Broadway workshops to original creations, our students truly made this summer their own!

Week Two of BCT's Viola Davis Summer Camp is off to a wonderful start! ⭐

Our "Write-A-Musical" students were throwing down ideas of what their show could possibly be. Our "Show-In-A-Week" students are honing their improv skills to prepare to sow off their hard work at the end of the week! 🎉

Then, Broadway star Gregory Treco came by and answered our students' burning questions, and taught us "My Shot" from HAMILTON! 🎭

A wonderful first week! 🎭✨

Our kids wrote a brand new musical called “UNTIL SUNSET,” which will be used in a future MainStage Performance. Our kids also made up and performed a show - all in one week - called ALIEN INVASION: POMPOMS and PICKLES!
From learning new choreography, to conquering FLOOR IS LAVA, to taking brave leaps on stage, our campers reminded us that every single moment is part of the journey.

Calling all teens!
NYSCA Grant Awardee, Tyrone L Robinson, will be collaborating with 8th-12th graders during BCT’s Viola Davis Summer Program, July 27-31, to create an original Agatha Christie-style Whodunnit.
We’ll have guest artists from Broadway’s Operation Mincemeat visiting to explore mystery and intrigue!

One last chance to see EMPOWERLAND!

This piece began with a simple inquiry: What is power?

Working with this remarkable ensemble of teens, we explored that question through our own experiences and through Shakespeare's history plays, where power is constantly being fought for, inherited, abused, and lost. Together, we examined the systems that shape our world and the stories we inherit about leadership, authority, and influence.

As the young people in our community prepare to step more fully into their own power, it feels especially important to ask how we create change without replicating the harms of the past. What kind of leadership do we need? What kind of power is worth seeking?
This piece doesn't offer answers. Instead, it brings Shakespeare's words into conversation with the voices, questions, and insights of the ensemble. We invite you to spend some time inside those questions with us.

Empowerland’s orchestrations sit as a reminder of the resilience of Black artistic creation in the midst of oppression. Black people have been relegated to the social periphery post colonialism while capitalism has exploited the Black body and used it as a foundation for modern Western economic systems and artistic aesthetics. In the midst of being marginalized, excluded and treated as monstrosities, Black people have been able to create art forms such as Jazz, hip hop, and house music as a technology for liberation. Empowerland’s orchestrations serve as a vehicle for students to question their inner politic, while also emboldening them through the genre of house music and through q***r revival as a tool to fight oppressive structures.
