Happy 4th Day of Kwanzaa! Today’s principle is Ujamaa (oo-JAH-mah), cooperative economics, which teaches us to support one another and to build businesses that benefit the whole community and helps it thrive. Through the collective spirit of togetherness we are guided to build and maintain our own stores, shops and businesses, with the goal of profiting from these endeavors as a community.

Kwanzaa, which comes from the Swahili phrase “matunda ya kwanza” or “first fruits,” was created by Professor Dr. Maulana Karenga. Kwanzaa is dedicated to the “Nguzo Saba,” which is also known as the seven principles. During this time, families and communities come together as a way to honor their ancestors while celebrating African and African-American culture. The first principle is Umoja (Unity). To strive for and maintain unity in the family, community, nation, and race.
