Why do BMWs need to announce every time somebody lets off the gas? 😂

POP. POP. BANG. Congratulations, your $70K car sounds like somebody dropped a toolbox down the stairs.

Burble tunes generally work by manipulating ignition and fueling so some combustion happens very late or continues into the exhaust. That means additional heat and combustion energy are being sent downstream instead of doing useful work inside the cylinder.

Your catalytic converter and other exhaust components already live an extremely hot life. More aggressive burble calibrations can expose the catalyst, oxygen sensors, exhaust valves and other downstream components to additional thermal stress.

An OEM burble calibration should have safeguards built around the exhaust system it was designed for. An aggressive aftermarket tune that turns every stoplight into artillery practice? Different conversation.

First gear is horrible tho fairly necessary.

When you’re learning stick, first gear can feel jerky, overly sensitive, the gear where you stall the most, and way less forgiving than any of the other gears.

There’s a mechanical reason for that. First gear has a large gear reduction, which multiplies torque at the wheels. That’s exactly what you need to get a stationary car moving, but it also means small changes in throttle and clutch engagement can have a much bigger effect..

Conquer first gear and the rest gets easier.

Which one leaves the line first? A, B, C, or D?

At first glance, you might pick D because the F-150 has the numerically highest 1st gear ratio. And if everything else were equal, you'd have the right idea.
A higher numerical gear ratio provides greater torque multiplication. So 100 lb-ft entering a 3:1 gear theoretically becomes about 300 lb-ft at the transmission output, before accounting for losses.

But here's the trick, first gear ratio alone cannot tell you which car accelerates fastest.

Actual acceleration also depends on:
⚙️ Final-drive ratio
💪 Engine torque at that RPM
⚖️ Vehicle weight
🛞 Tire diameter and traction
📈 Power curve
🔄 Drivetrain losses

How long the car can remain in 1st before shifting
So if the question is literally "based ONLY on first gear," D wins the torque-multiplication contest. But if we're actually racing these four cars, the numbers shown aren't enough to pick a winner.

I see this overlooked so often, before using gas, I would even recommend being able to make the car go with just the clutch, and then if you're ready to use gas, make sure you're not doing more gas less clutch!

Really explains why traffic keeps get worse and worse.

Ever wonder why 1st gear pulls hard, but 5th gear lets you go fast? ⚙️

That’s gear ratio doing the work.
Think of your transmission as a tradeoff between torque and speed:

🔧 Lower gears: More torque multiplication at the wheels, but less vehicle speed for a given engine RPM. That’s why 1st gear is ideal for getting a car moving.
🏎️ Higher gears: Less torque multiplication, but more road speed for the same engine RPM. That’s why you cruise in the higher gears rather than trying to do 70 mph in 1st.

🔄 Reverse: An additional idler gear in a conventional manual transmission reverses the direction of rotation, which makes the vehicle travel backward.
And here's the part beginners often miss: the engine isn't suddenly making more torque because you selected 1st. The transmission is multiplying the torque the engine already produces.

1963 Citroën DS 19. This thing was basically a spaceship compared with most cars on the road. 🇫🇷🛸

Look at that interior. One-spoke steering wheel, column-mounted gear selector, and styling that still looks strange more than 60 years later.

But the DS wasn't weird just for the sake of being French. It was genuinely packed with engineering that was decades ahead of many competitors:

🛞 Self-leveling hydropneumatic suspension
💧 One high-pressure hydraulic system operated the suspension, steering, brakes and, on semi-automatic versions, the clutch and gear selection
🚗 Front-wheel drive
🛑 Front disc brakes
⚙️ 1.9L inline-four
🎚️ Driver-adjustable ride height
🛋️ A ride famous for feeling more like floating than driving

The funny part? Underneath all that futuristic engineering, the 1963 DS 19 was still working with a 1,911cc four-cylinder whose basic lineage went back to the prewar Traction Avant. Depending on specification, roughly 83 hp was moving this technological masterpiece around.

And 1963 brought another interesting option: you could finally get a DS with a conventional clutch pedal and four-speed manual transmission instead of Citroën's hydraulic semi-automatic setup.

So here's the question:

Would you daily-drive one of these today?
