In honor of City of Forest Day, our Environmental & Sustainability Club brought the campus community together for an incredible, student-led initiative to plant five cherry trees.

The planting is part of the College’s ongoing effort to restore trees lost during Hurricane Sandy. 🌳🌸

Thank you Trees New York for your generous $170,000 contribution, secured through a private funding partner, which is helping to make this initiative possible, and to Executive Director Nelson Villarrubia and the rest of the Trees New York team for joining our campus community for the planting.

A powerful reminder of what justice, perseverance, and public service can look like.

It was an honor to welcome my good friend, justice advocate and Calvin Duncan author Calvin Duncan, to Kingsborough Community College for a “Journey to Justice” fireside chat and book signing. Calvin shared his extraordinary story, from spending nearly three decades wrongfully incarcerated at Angola Penitentiary to becoming a jailhouse lawyer, earning his law degree, and continuing his work to support affected individuals and communities and to reform the criminal legal system.

I’m grateful to Calvin for speaking so openly with our students and community, and for reminding us of the importance of using our voices, our educations, and our experiences to advocate for meaningful change.

We were pleased to welcome Alison Overseth, CEO of the Partnership for After School Education (PASE), to Kingsborough Community College!

During her campus visit, Alison joined KCC President Dr. Suri Duitch, VP Nancy L. Sanchez-Badillo, Alumnus Rosa Perdomo '25, student ambassadors Jennifer Vasquez and Dominique Laporte, and faculty for an inside look at the transformative learning experiences happening across our campus.
From exploring the marina, the KCC Farm and learning about hands-on experiential education to visiting our Surgical Technology Lab and meeting faculty who prepare students for careers in healthcare, the visit highlighted the many ways Kingsborough connects education, opportunity, and career pathways.

A special thank you to our dedicated faculty, Dr. Shannon Caravello and Professor Roxanne West and students for sharing their work and experiences, and to Alison for spending time with the KCC community. We look forward to continuing to build meaningful partnerships that help Brooklyn students grow, thrive, and succeed. 💙🌱

Earlier this week, we officially opened the RISE Center at Kingsborough Community College! The Resources for Immigrant Student Success in Education (RISE) Center will provide coordinated, centralized academic, career, financial, legal, and mental health support for our immigrant students and their families.

Approximately 150 students, faculty, staff, administrators, and supporters from across CUNY and the Brooklyn community joined us for a ribbon-cutting ceremony in the International Hall of Flags.

I was happy to be joined by Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso, The City University of New York Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Denise Maybank, CUNY Director for Undocumented and Immigrant Student Programs Cynthia Carvajal, PSC Secretary Andrea Vásquez, Professor Robert Cowan of the PSC's Immigrant Solidarity Working Group, Brooklyn College ISSO, founding director Jesús Pérez, KCC Foundation Chair Dr. Kwesi Blackman, KCC Foundation Trustee Dr. Vanessa V. Vales-Lewis, Dean of Student Affairs Natasha Edwards, RISE Center Director Gavin Ireland, our immigration attorney Erick Myssura, and KCC student Aijamal Sharshenova.
