Celebrating Our LEEP Families & Their Heritage
One of our LEEP families shared a beautiful tradition that is especially meaningful to their family. Here is their story, in their own words:
“One tradition that is especially meaningful to our family is celebrating Hari Raya Idulfitri (Eid), which marks the end of Ramadan and is an important part of our Malay Singaporean heritage.
We celebrate by sharing traditional dishes like rendang (coconut beef stew) and ketupat (rice cakes cooked in woven coconut leaves), wearing traditional clothing such as baju kurung, baju kebaya, and batik, and participating in community events like the LEEP Heritage Parade.
For our daughter, Indah, growing up in New York City gives her the special opportunity to embrace all parts of her background while being surrounded by a diverse community that celebrates different cultures. Living here helps us honor and keep her Malay Singaporean, Puerto Rican, and Afro-Dominican heritage vibrant.”
