ARTDOM (Workshop of Vladimir Davidenko)

Private and group art lessons
in Red Hook, Brooklyn,
for children (12+) and adults

Classes in March, 2018 (a schedule for group lessons is listed below)

Drawing aux deux crayons / Portrait — 2 hours
12 years and up
Private lesson (all supplies are included) $70
Group lesson (all supplies are included) $55
You are invited to draw a self-portrait (private lessons) or a portrait of your fellow student using an old technique called in French aux deux crayons (two pencils). You’ll be provided with tinted paper and two pencils: one light, one dark (colors at your choice). Beginners are welcome.

Grotesque ornaments — 2 hours
12 years and up
Private lesson (all supplies are included) $80
Group lesson (all supplies are included) $65
Aside from being an ancient and intricate format of decorative art, grotesque also defines the nature of perception of reality, in which phenotypes appear in a hypertrophied, bizarre form. Aubrey Beardsley, one of my favorite artists, said: “If I am not grotesque, I am nothing.” Among the artists who made grotesque their main artistic discourse were Giuseppe Arcimboldo, Hieronymus Bosch, Pieter Bruegel the Elder, Salvador Dali, Max Ernst (remember his collages?), to name just a few. Traditionally an ornament used in decorative arts, architecture and book illustration, grotesque can take on a form of a painting, a drawing or a collage. You are invited to create your own grotesque composition, using the elements and medium of your choice. At my studio you’ll be provided with various water-based materials: regular and metallic acrylic paints, watercolor, metallic pencils, even water mixable oil paints (consider the drying time though). You may even use some real 22k gold leaf. You will also get Bristol paper (smooth or watercolor). Bring your scrap books for inspiration, or any pictures you’d like to incorporate into your grotesque. Beginners are welcome.

Mixed media: watercolor on acrylic — 2 sessions X 2 hours
12 years and up
Private lesson (all supplies are included) $150
Group lesson (all supplies are included) $120
You are invited to explore one of my favorite techniques. Painting with watercolor on acrylic surfaces (acrylic medium or stucco) will give you a certain advantage: you’ll be able to wash off watercolor, thus controlling the value and creating some magic effects. You will learn how texture, when treated with watercolor, adds depth to your artwork. You will be provided with one previously prepared board (8”X10”) to learn the tricks and advantages, and then you will prepare another board (9”X12”) by yourself. It will get dry until the second session, which will be dedicated entirely to your second artwork. At my studio you’ll be provided with boards, acrylic mediums, watercolor, brushes, knives, varnish (to seal your art works). Beginners are welcome.

Oil painting / Basics — 2 sessions X 2 hours
12 years and up
Private lesson (all supplies are included) $160
Group lesson (supplies are not included) $120
The basics of oil painting include: introduction to the types of pigments (opaque and translucent), mediums, techniques, brushes, knives; painting a still life in two sessions to explore glazing technique, which requires the underpaint to be completely dry. For the private lessons you’ll be provided with canvased board, paints, brushes and mediums. For the group lessons: you will be asked to bring your own paints and brushes (or you may pay $25 and use studio supplies); a canvased board will be provided. Beginners are welcome.

Art of trompe l’œil / Basics — 3 sessions X 2 hours
16 years and up
Private lesson (all supplies are included) $360
Group lesson (all supplies are included) $320
Trompe l’œil, or “trick of the eye”, is the manner of depicting the objects in a convincingly realistic way, which used to be one of the main criteria in appreciation of art until the second half of the nineteenth century. You are invited to learn the tricks of the art of deception. Centuries ago people would have to spend 6 years working in the trade as apprentices to learn what you will learn in 6 hours (figuratively speaking). In these 3 sessions you will be introduced to the tools and methods of painting faux marbre (marble imitation) and faux bois (wood imitation, namely flamed mahogany). You will learn how to match the color of base coat; how to combine mechanical and artistic approaches in painting trompe l’œil; how to use multilayered glazing — the basic technique in trompe l’œil and faux finishes. At my studio you’ll be provided with all supplies needed. Beginners are welcome.

THE STUDIO:
it is not a traditional classroom, but an intimate artist’s studio/hermitage with good selection of books on fine and decorative arts, a turntable, two boxes of vinyl, an accordion and a theremin to fill the breaks. And hot tea, indeed.
