Dear Parent or Guardian:
Great News! Our school is partnering with Smile New York Outreach to offer in-school dental care!
Safety First!
Children will be treated by our licensed, highly trained staff in our portable clinic that meets all CDC and Department of Health guidelines.
Children will receive a:
• Dental exam
• Cleaning
• X-rays
• Sealants, as needed, to prevent cavities
• Silver diamine fluoride (SDF), as needed on back teeth to treat decay and make teeth less sensitive. (It is normal for SDF to turn brown decay darker as it is working. Healthy areas of teeth will not change color)
• All children will leave with a dental report card and a toothbrush
No Cost to You
IMPORTANT – We are required to bill insurance for care, so please provide dental insurance information if you have it. But, you will never receive a bill or request for any payment from Smile NY. All children are seen, even if they don’t have insurance.
Safe, Easy & Convenient
Having your child seen by the in-school dentist saves you valuable time. Top quality care is provided by local, New York licensed professionals right in the familiar surroundings of your child’s school.
Once your child returns a signed consent, it is good for as long as your child attends this school. We will call you in advance of an in-school dental clinic.
Keep Your Child Healthy
By having your child see the in-school dentist, you can help reduce the risk of:
Pain and Suffering
Absence from School
Unnecessary Loss of Teeth
Impaired Speech Development
Go to www.myschooldentist.com and fill out a permission form TODAY.
Or complete a permission form and return it to your school.

School Meals
Students attending school in person will be offered free breakfast and lunch daily in school. Please get in touch with your school for more information on meal times and locations.
Support School Funding
You do not need to apply for your child to receive meals. However, we do ask families to complete the Family Income Inquiry Form, which helps schools receive money for their programs. Your school will send a copy of this form home with your child, or you can get it from your school’s main office.

Dear Clara Cardwell Families,
As we begin to launch the 2023-24 school year, it is with great enthusiasm and anticipation that we extend our warmest welcome. The trust that you give to the educators at Clara Cardwell to provide high-quality instruction and provide social-emotional support to your children is valued and we appreciate your partnership. We are excited to continue working together to sustain the warm culture and inclusive learning environment for all students at Clara Cardwell. As I enter my second year as superintendent, I look forward to leading the district
with our core values of empathy, equity, engagement and excellence, every day in every way. I truly believe that we will continue to showcase Bed-Stuy Brilliance and create new traditions and reimagined experience for students and families.
I want to give our sincere regards to Principal Odwin who has provided leadership and guidance to Clara Cardwell over the last seven years. Principal Odwin’s heart and spirit will be missed in district 16, and we wish her the best with her retirement.
Our theme for 2023-24 is, “Pass the Baton”. Please join me in welcoming Naisha Webster, Interim Acting
Principal, who has received the baton from Principal Odwin to lead Clara Cardwell.
In the spirit of continued collaboration and community engagement, we are excited to announce that the district 16 community, in partnership with all stakeholders, will be participating in a C-30
(https://bit.ly/C30reg) process to select a permanent leader for your school. Your input and insights are
invaluable, and we encourage you to actively participate in the upcoming discussions and interviews as we collectively shape the future leadership of our educational institutions.
At the heart of District 16 is a commitment to fostering an environment where every student can thrive
academically, socially, and emotionally. We look forward to the incredible possibilities that the new school year brings, as we work together to inspire growth, curiosity, and success within each student.
Thank you for being an integral part of the district 16 family. Here's to a rewarding and transformative
academic year ahead!
Warm regards,
Brendan T. Mims
