My 5 tips for a healthy neck in your yoga practice

1️⃣ Dropping your head back in an updog is a treat, not a must.

2️⃣ When your arms are overhead, use the shelf of your shoulder blades.

3️⃣ When arms are not overhead, use the retraction method.

4️⃣ If your neck hurts, don’t move it too much. Keep it neutral in your poses.

5️⃣ Press your whole tongue into the whole roof of your mouth to stabilize your neck in backbends. It’s a game changer.

Let me know if any of these help! Save a follow for more yoga tips. 🙏🏻💎

Sedona, Arizona! Our morning hikes through these beautiful Red Rock mountains was so healing. And the meditations in the vortex were vortexing. We met a race of orange aliens — no mushrooms were involved. Just focusing on our third eyes in the vortex and Bam! 💥 Hi 👋🏻

So many synchronicities! It got weird… I was personally greeted by a snake in my bedroom, a coyote, a hummingbird, and a double rainbow! The second pic (Atara took a selfie!) this ray of light in the pic was coming down where we had just meditated. The hiking with the meditations with this amazing group of meditators was a love explosion!💥

Special thanks to The Airy Thing for coordinating and producing this meditation gathering. Everything Sally and Rich touch turns to gold! We will do a meditation training on the Big Island of Hawaii end of Feb 2027. For info please sign up for my newsletter through the linktree in bio.

Hot take: jumping straight back into chaturanga isn’t protecting your back — it’s just costing your shoulders.

The cue sounds efficient. Float back, land in low plank, one smooth motion. But landing there means your bodyweight drops onto bent elbows and internally rotated shoulders mid-air, with no chance to check your position first. Do that 40 times a class, three classes a week, and it adds up.

And no — jumping in isn’t better for your back. Your spine barely moves either way. You’re in one long line the whole transition. There’s nothing you’re protecting by landing hard.

The fix costs you half a second: → Jump or step back to full plank, arms straight, shoulders over wrists → Pause. Check the line. → Lower with control, elbows tracking straight back → Stop at elbow height → Shoulder blades plugged down your back, never creeping toward your ears

Can you jump straight in and keep everything stacked? Sure. But doing that with control on every single vinyasa, class after class, is hard to sustain. Not strong enough for full plank yet? Drop the knees on the way down — still safer than dive-bombing.

Your flow still looks smooth. Your shoulders just stop paying for it.

Little more detail about backbends and Ashwini mudra which is….(TRIGGER WARNING!!!!!)….your a**s. I didn’t realize that so many people would be so upset by this word, or the use of this muscle in backbending postures. I know the video is long so please watch it when you have time if you are interested. I appreciate all of your comments and hope that we can discuss this topic without hate. Thanks for listening. 🙏🏻

The point of your life is to be happy.
What keeps us from our own happiness is judging and/or holding grudges towards others.
Have compassion. Let others be where they are without thinking things should be different. Loving others is really about loving yourself. Don’t take the bait!

Sum Phat is a Taoist form of meditation that focuses on surrender, healing, and allowing. It turns the rules on their head for many conventional forms of meditation that look “still.”

The practice of Sum Phat is the practice of allowing your body to do whatever it wants/needs to do without your mind judging or questioning. It is very helpful to strengthen intuition and also to get clear on how you feel.

It is weird, but so are we all! I will be teaching Sum Phat in Sedona, Arizona for the HEARTX meditation retreat, Aug 7-12. More details in my linktree in my bio.
