This week, our Black History Month learning opportunity is the Weeksville Heritage Center in Brooklyn. A historic site and cultural center dedicated to preserving the remnants of a thriving village established by Black New Yorkers after the state abolished slavery in 1827. Weeksville Heritage Center uses education, arts and a social justice lens to preserve, document and inspire engagement with the history of Weeksville, one of the largest free Black communities in pre-Civil War America, and the Historic Hunterfly Road Houses.
