A Piano Grows in Brooklyn

A Piano Grows in Brooklyn is the teaching business of Andrew Pierson Hoepfner, a piano instructor in We explore music theory, scales, and exercises.

I am proud to offer my versatile lessons to piano students of all ages. My approach is based on the personality and goals of each student. With my students interested in traditional piano lessons, we study how to read and play sheet music. Many students do better with a more creative approach. I teach these students to learn their favorite songs by ear or by using chord charts. Some students want

to focus on being able to perform solo or play with a band. We study improvisation, the ability to sing while playing, and sometimes we work on songwriting and recording together. Stylistically, my lessons run the gamut. Students learn classical, jazz, and pop songs. They learn songs from movies and TV, obscure indie songs, and songs from video games and viral videos. The majority of my students live in Brooklyn and Manhattan. I tend to teach the most in Williamsburg, Greenpoint, and Park Slope, but I extend my services to many other nearby neighborhoods. Music is an excellent way to multiply intelligence, express the self, and deepen appreciation for the world around us. I keep this idea at the heart of my teaching. About Andrew: I have been a passionate piano player for 28 years and a devoted instructor for 14. I'm the pianist of three churches in Brooklyn. During my twenties, I spent much of my time touring the world in rock bands and touring a musical.

Meet our teachers - Nathan Reising is an experienced performer and teacher with a wide range of musical interests. Classically trained on piano from the age of 4, he eventually developed an interest in jazz and went on to study jazz saxophone and piano at the New England Conservatory in Boston, MA. Nathan enjoys working with students of all ages and musical interests, from young beginners to aspiring pros. He specializes in teaching jazz, improvisation, pop music, and songwriting.

Meet our teachers - William Charles Wagner is a professional bassist, keyboardist, composer and educator based in Brooklyn, NY. He received his undergraduate and graduate degrees in Jazz Studies from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. He has served as music director for two off-Broadway musicals at Theater for the New City for the productions of “Romeo & Juliet” and “Frankenstein.”He has shared the stage with Bill Cunliffe, Fareed Haque, J.D. Allen, Jason Rebello (Sting), John Von Ohlen (Stan Kenton), and Josiah Wolf (Why?), to name a few. As a composer, he has received a Downbeat Award for Composition and has released multiple EPs of original works, available on streaming platforms everywhere.

Meet our teachers - Graeme Gengras is a pianist and producer originally from Portland, Maine. Since moving to NYC in 2018 he has become involved in all aspects of the city's diverse music scene as a jazz pianist, backing up R&B singers, playing keyboards for bands of all kinds and as an accompanist at Middle Church in the East Village where he is a regular sub for the Jerriese Johnson Gospel Choir. Outside of performing and creating, Graeme enjoys teaching and sharing his love for music with students of all ages.
