Congratulations to our 1st Grade Teacher, Mrs. Garosshen on being named Brooklyn Public Schools' Teacher Of The Year!! We are so proud of you and thank you for your hard work and dedication to BES!
Brooklyn Elementary School Teacher Nominated for the 2027 Brooklyn Teacher of the Year!
Brooklyn Elementary School proudly recognizes Heather Garosshen for her nomination as Brooklyn Teacher of the 2027 Year, honoring her exceptional dedication to students, families, and the greater school community.
Mrs. Garroshen consistently goes above and beyond for her students through engaging, student-focused instruction, strong relationships with families, and her dedication to creating a positive and supportive school community. Her philosophy of teaching reflects a deep belief that impactful education extends beyond instruction alone and requires responsiveness, flexibility, and a genuine understanding of every child’s unique needs.
Over the course of her teaching career, Heather has evolved her instructional practices to prioritize student voice, collaboration, and differentiated learning opportunities. By implementing flexible grouping, targeted interventions, and data-informed instruction, she ensures all students receive the support and challenges necessary for academic and social success. Her classroom fosters confidence, perseverance, and a love of learning among students of all backgrounds and abilities.
Mrs. Garroshen is committed to continuous professional growth and leadership within the school community. She mentors pre-student teachers and student teachers while also sharing her knowledge with colleagues through professional development presentations focused on Science of Reading strategies and small-group instruction. She is TEAM trained, completed WestEd Science of Reading training, and currently serves on the PBIS and Sunshine Committees. She also serves as chair of the school’s Fun Day Committee.
One of Heather’s most impactful contributions to Brooklyn Elementary School has been the development and coordination of a schoolwide Veterans Day Assembly beginning in 2025. The initiative honors local veterans while helping students develop gratitude, empathy, and respect for community members. Working collaboratively with colleagues, administrators, families, and local veterans, Heather created an event that strengthened school-community connections and fostered school pride. The assembly has quickly become a meaningful tradition within the school community.
Heather is also known for extending learning beyond the classroom through authentic community engagement and extensive communication with families. She welcomes families into the classroom to work alongside students, decorate gingerbread cookies during the holiday season, and participate in a cherished first-grade tradition she created called “Books and Blankets,” where students write and publish their own books and then share them with their families. She creates meaningful learning experiences that inspire students to take ownership of their work and recognize its impact beyond school walls.
A parent who nominated Heather praised her “unparalleled communication, family engagement, and school spirit,” noting that she has sent more than 100 classroom communications this school year alone to keep families informed, connected, and actively engaged in their child’s learning and the school community. The parent also highlighted Heather’s expertise in early childhood education and her ability to encourage all learners to grow. Colleagues describe her as innovative, dedicated, and consistently willing to go above and beyond for students. She is also known as someone who is always ready to support others and lend a helping hand.
Brooklyn Elementary School is proud to celebrate Heather’s nomination for Brooklyn Teacher of the Year and recognizes the lasting difference she continues to make in the lives of her students, colleagues, families, and community.
