Geoffrey Hinton, one of the pioneers of AI, warned that future AI could become hard to control if it learns to rewrite and improve its own code. However, he said today's AI cannot do this yet.
Hinton, who won the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on AI, said no one knows exactly when AI might become smarter than humans. Some experts think it could happen in just a few years, while he believes it may take up to 20 years.
He compared advanced AI to raising a very intelligent child that could one day develop its own goals. Hinton said the biggest challenge is making sure humans stay in control as AI becomes more powerful.
He also said losing control of AI is not certain. Instead, he urged governments, researchers, and AI companies to invest much more in AI safety before creating even more powerful systems.
