My new book, Think Like a Zen Master: the Multiverse of Zen Koan, has finally been published. This book is a collection of articles that have appeared in Dharma Drum's Life magazine over the past year. This is my experiment in ‘koan" writing," a semi-autobiographical writing that delves into the interplay and dialogue between Zen (or koan) practice and literature, film, cultural studies, and ecocriticism. Here, I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to Prof. Hsinya Huang for writing an elegant and insightful preface for me.

Speaker:
Prof. Anthony Lioi, the Juilliard School
• Title: Superpowers, Posthumanism, and Immigration in Asian American Popular Culture
• Discussant: Shu-ching Chen, National Chung Hsing University• Date:
New York: 11/17, Friday, 9:00-10:30 pm
Taiwan: 11/18, Saturday 10:00-11:30 am
• Description:
Asian American popular culture is experiencing a moment. In this talk, I argue that the Anglo-American tendency to see Asians as perpetual foreigners is being challenged by artists who represent Asian American stories as universal American stories. Everything Everywhere All at Once has at its core a generational melodrama familiar across ethnicity to immigrant families. Superman Smashes the Klan, a graphic novel, rewrites the Superman mythos through the story of a young Chinese girl resisting white supremacy. Ms. Marvel--both comic book and MCU tv show--narrates a Pakistani Muslim as a friendly neighborhood hero like Spider-Man. In each instance, this is achieved through the tropes of superhuman power and posthumanist connection to the more-than-human multiverse. Ecocritics and environmental humanists can gain insight into anti-racist modes of representation by paying attention to Asian American popular culture.
• Bio:
Anthony Lioi is a professor of English at The Juilliard School in New York City, where he teaches contemporary literature, composition, and the environmental humanities. His work has been published in ISLE, Feminist Studies, ImageTexT, MELUS, Acoma, Ecozon@, and in a number of critical anthologies. He is a past president of ASLE: Association for the Study of Literature and Environment and an editor of Resilience: A Journal of the Environmental Humanities. In 2016, he published Nerd Ecology, the first ecocritical study of nerd culture. He is at work on Metahumanism and Media, on fan cultures as agents of ecotopia.
