Our international group of panelists will discuss the contradictions, dilemmas, and intimate aspects of authoritarianism: how it affects the way we behave, feel, and relate to each other; how it generates indignation, fear, paranoia, resignation, or trauma; how it changes what we choose to hold dear and what we come to find unbearable; and it how alters daily routines and ways of life, namely, where we move and how we work, love, and live.
Zeynep Gambetti, a political theorist and co-chair of the International Board of the International Consortium of Critical Theory, will moderate the discussion of our four panelists: Rahul Bhatia, journalist and author of The New India: The Unmaking of the World’s Largest Democracy (PublicAffairs, 2024); Volkan Çidam, political philosopher and member of Academics for Peace, Istanbul; Maik Dele Dittrich Frydetzki, performance artist, cultural researcher, and associate of the Christopher Street Day organization in Bautzen (Eastern Saxony, Germany); and Joseph Howley, Professor of Classics at Columbia University and organizer with the Palestine Solidarity movement. NEW RELEASE: In this April Institute Short, Julie Carr discusses her new book Mud, Blood, and Ghosts: Populism, Eugenics, and Spiritualism in the American West. Carr describes what happens when familial and national mythologies are turned upside down and we must find our footing in a new historical understanding of ourselves and our world. These reorientations can be difficult, says Carr, but when we are able to accept the complexities of our histories, as individuals and as a nation, including the fascistic tendencies that run through these histories, we can find a greater commitment to resisting such tendencies whenever they arise.
