🧠 Strong readers and spellers don’t memorize every word by sight.

🧠 Through orthographic mapping, the brain connects a word’s sounds, letters, and meaning, allowing words to become permanently stored for rapid retrieval.

🧠 As reading researcher David Kilpatrick explains, “Orthographic mapping is the process we use to store words for immediate, effortless retrieval.”

💬 What does a literacy clinic actually look like at the Caterpillar Room?

💬 Not flashcards. Not worksheets on repeat. Real multi-sensory resources used purposefully.

💬 Every session at The Caterpillar Room engages the whole body, as well as sight, sound, and touch, tapping out phonemes, tracing letters, connecting sounds to symbols systematically, one skill at a time.

💬 And we don’t expect kids to sit still for it. Movement is part of how we teach, not a break from it, kids are up, moving their whole bodies through a sound or a letter shape.

💬 A lot of programs call themselves “multi-sensory” because it’s in the curriculum description.

📙30 hours of Orton-Gillingham training is not expertise. It is the beginning.

📘Today, “Orton-Gillingham” and “Structured Literacy” are increasingly used as catchphrases. But simply attaching those words to instruction can undermine the very body of research these approaches are meant to put into practice, particularly as our country continues to confront a reading crisis.

📘Orton-Gillingham is not a script, a curriculum, or a credential to place on a flyer. It is a methodology grounded in principles that require a knowledgeable practitioner to observe the learner, understand the research, make instructional decisions, and continually adjust.

📘Advertising and throwing around catchphrases such as “evidence-based” doesn’t make someone a skilled practitioner. Teaching children to read is a serious undertaking and advertising you can for the sake of business is a dangerous game to play.

📕Parents, ask questions.
How much OG training have you received? When exactly did you receive your training? From where? Did you receive any additional training? And perhaps most importantly, how many actual clinical hours have you spent applying, analyzing, refining, and individualizing that methodology with children?

📗There is a reason expertise in other clinical professions develops through supervised training, residency, fellowship, continued study, and years of application.
